ANALYSIS: Colorado State has been extremely effective at times this year and should be regarded as a serious opponent. Carrying a record of 25-6, they are currently rated #36 overall (out of 358) in All-Play Percentage this season. Of the 11 schools in the MWC (average ranking 107.5), they're currently ranked as our #2 team in the conference.
Colorado State is one of the very most competent offensive teams in the country. Ranked 25th in offensive efficiency, they'll rack up more than 111 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Colorado State is deadly accurate at the free throw line. Making 77.0% of their attempts from the stripe, they are ranked 21st nationally in free throw percentage. Colorado State is also an outstanding shooting team, capable of converting from a variety of locations on the floor and ranking in the top-50 in each of our four most noteworthy field goal categories. Though they're most successful shooting the mid-range jumper (42.5% vs. AO, 21st in the country), the team also makes 36.2% of their three-pointers (44th), 65.7% of their near-proximity chances (23rd), and 47.6% of their total shots from the field (22nd) vs. AO. If Colorado State does have a glaring weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's difficulties obtaining second-chance opportunities from offensive rebounds. The squad only has a rating of 9.98 vs. AO in potential points off of second chances, which ranks 24th-worst in college hoops.
Colorado State plays at roughly the same level defensively as they do offensively. The team ranks 58th nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 95 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Colorado State does a pretty solid job avoiding careless fouls and minimizing opponents' opportunities from the free throw line. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 20.86 vs. AO, they are currently rated 38th in the country in that category. Colorado State also owns a pretty good track record against teams that shoot the three. They rank 53rd in the NCAA in defensive three-point percentage, allowing AO to make just 30.6% of their attempts from afar.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Colorado State performs better against squads that do not defend well on the perimeter. When facing teams that have a defensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 29.90%, Colorado State is more efficient than normal 52% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 11% of the time.
When playing teams that convert more frequently off of offensive rebounds, Colorado State usually performs better than average. Colorado State is more efficient than normal 56% of the time when facing clubs that have an offensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 4.62%. In all other contests, Colorado State performs better than average 17% of the time.
