ANALYSIS: This website places USC in the top 25% of all NCAA college basketball teams this year. Carrying a record of 22-9, they are currently rated #54 overall (out of 353) in All-Play Percentage this season. They are also ranked by this site as the #6 team (out of 12) in the Pac-12 (average ranking 64.8).
USC will suffocate most opponents with its stifling defense. Allowing roughly 90 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO, this squad is rated #23 in defensive efficiency. USC will put a good dent in the shooting percentages of several opponents, considering the team ranks in the top-50 in each of the four major defensive shooting categories. They allow AO to make just 30.4% of their three-pointers (36th in the nation), 33.2% of their mid-range shots (38th), 51.4% of their near-proximity attempts (13th), and 37.5% of their total shots from the field (seventh). USC is also one of the better teams when it comes to not allowing opponents to convert scoring chances off of offensive rebounds. The squad allows AO to convert only 3.7% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 29th in the NCAA), and with a rating of 10.88, they're 40th in potential points allowed off of the offensive glass as well.
USC is also a fairly decent team on the offensive end of the court. The team ranks 104th nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 103 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. USC is one of the better teams in the country when it comes to converting scoring chances off of offensive rebounds. Against AO, the team successfully converts 6.6% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 38th nationally). USC also boasts one of the better offensive field goal percentages in the college game. The squad is ranked 44th in the country in field goal percentage, making approximately 46.0% of their attempts vs. AO. If USC does have a weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's penchant for allowing too many easy buckets off of giveaways. The squad has a rating of 13.43 vs. AO in potential points allowed off of steals, which ranks 29th-worst in the college game.
USC has been one of the more erratic teams in NCAA basketball this year (presently ranked 318th in the country in consistency), which makes forecasting the outcomes of their upcoming games tougher than most.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When playing teams that convert more frequently off of offensive rebounds, USC usually performs better than average. USC is more efficient than normal 76% of the time when facing clubs that have an offensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 4.87%. In all other contests, USC performs better than average 20% of the time.
USC is typically worse vs. teams that typically allow more than a fair share of breakaway opportunities. Against foes that have a potential point rate allowed off steals vs. AO greater than 11.11, USC performs above their norm 31% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 78% of the time.
When facing teams that tend to capitalize off breakaway opportunities, USC often performs better than normal. USC is more efficient than usual 80% of the time when facing teams that have a potential point rate off steals vs. AO greater than 11.36. In their other contests, USC performs better than the norm 38% of the time.
