ANALYSIS: USC is a moderately good team, capable of testing many an opponent that they'll encounter. They are ranked #61 (out of 351) in the most recent Haslametrics ratings and have a record of 21-13. They are also ranked by this site as the #6 team (out of 12) in the Pac-12 (average ranking 69.0).
The primary strength for USC this year is offense. The team is ranked 42nd in efficiency on that end of the floor, and they'll rack up more than 110 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. USC boasts one of the better offensive field goal percentages in the college game. The squad is ranked 27th in the country in field goal percentage, making approximately 47.5% of their attempts vs. AO. USC is also one of the more accurate teams in the college game when it comes to shooting the three. They're ranked 29th nationally in three-point field goal percentage and make about 38.6% of their attempts from there vs. AO. Though they convert many of their threes, the team doesn't really shoot a ton of them. Only 32.3% of their total attempts vs. AO are from long-distance.
USC is also a fairly decent team on the defensive end of the court. The team ranks 117th nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 100 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. USC is a superior unit when it comes to preventing opponents from getting to the foul line. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 21.43 vs. AO, they are currently rated fifth in the country in that category. USC has also done a really good job this year to prevent opponents from making shots from the inside. They are ranked 43rd in the country in defensive near-proximity percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 54.4% of their attempts from close-up. If USC does exhibit a noticeable weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's propensity to allow too many shot attempts per trip. The squad has a rating of 88.17 in defensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO, which ranks tenth-worst in college basketball.
On the road, USC performs noticeably worse than they do at home. The team is currently ranked 329th in the country in the away-from-home metric we track.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
USC does better vs. clubs that prefer the outside shot. When playing squads that have an offensive shooting proximity score vs. AO greater than 1.97, USC performs above average 81% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 39% of the time.
USC performs worse against squads that do a nice job converting inside the paint. When facing teams that have an offensive near-proximity field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 61.85%, USC is more efficient than normal 41% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 77% of the time.
