ANALYSIS: While not an atrocious team by any means, Albany is not exactly one that should appear in many top-100 rankings either. Haslametrics has them ranked 210th overall (out of 357) in All-Play Percentage, and the team holds a record of 7-9. They are also ranked by this site as the #4 team (out of 10) in the America East (average ranking 231.7).
Albany does not have a terribly exceptional defense this year. Rated at #224 in defensive efficiency, they allow around 103 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Albany performs really badly when attempting to stop opponents from making mid-range jumpers. The squad is ranked ninth from the bottom nationally in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on 46.3% of their attempts from those in-between spots on the floor. Albany also allows opponents' field goal percentages to get far too high. The ball-club ranks #315 nationally in field goal percentage allowed, as AO will convert approximately 47.0% of their total attempts from the floor. If Albany does have a bright spot on defense, it would have to be their ability to prevent opponents from converting second-chance opportunities via offensive rebounds. The team has a defensive second-chance conversion percentage of 3.1% vs. AO, which ranks 14th-best in the nation.
Albany doesn't rate much better on offense than they do on defense. Scoring roughly 98 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #203 in the nation in offensive efficiency. Albany is one of the more inferior teams in the college game when it comes to maximizing opportunities to score on offense. The team is nationally ranked 318th in offensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of only 78.17 vs. AO. Albany also does a fairly poor job cleaning the offensive glass. Against AO, the ball-club has a rating of 9.93 in potential points scored off of second chances (313th nationally). If Albany does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's ability to successfully hit from mid-range locations on the court. The team makes 42.4% of their in-between field goal attempts vs. AO, which ranks 45th in the NCAA.
Albany is one of the more consistent teams in Division I (presently ranked 49th in consistency), so forecasting the outcomes of their future contests tends to be easier than the norm. When playing on the road, Albany has played their best basketball this season. The team is currently ranked sixth in the country in the away-from-home metric our site tracks.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When playing teams that allow opponents to shoot well from the field, Albany usually performs better than average. Albany is more efficient than normal 75% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 44.89%. In all other contests, Albany performs better than average 25% of the time.
