ANALYSIS: UC Riverside is a fairly decent basketball team that, while likely better than average, isn't quite good enough to crack any top-25 rankings this year. Ranked 149th overall (out of 364) in our most recent ratings, they presently have a record of 21-13. They are also ranked by this site as the #5 team (out of 11) in the Big West (average ranking 191.7).
If there is a strength for UC Riverside this year, it's probably on the offensive end of the court. The team is rated 132nd in offensive efficiency, scoring more than 110 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. UC Riverside has one of the better squads in the college game when it comes to maximizing opportunities to score. The team is ranked 30th in the NCAA in offensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 91.11 vs. AO. As far as making those field goal attempts goes, the team is somewhat middle-of-the-road, converting about 43.1% of them vs. AO. UC Riverside also does a really good job converting from the free throw line. Making 77.1% of their attempts from the stripe, they are ranked 38th nationally in free throw percentage. Unfortunately, with a free throw attempt rate of just 25.06 vs. AO, they don't provide themselves a whole lot of opportunities at the foul line.
The defense for UC Riverside, on the other hand, isn't nearly as efficient as the offense is. The team is ranked 240th in defensive efficiency, allowing about 111 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. UC Riverside will fail to secure many opportunities to score quickly off of steals. They're ranked #294 in potential points off of breakaway steals with a rating of only 10.05 vs. AO. If UC Riverside does have a bright spot on defense, it would have to be their ability to prevent opponents from converting second-chance opportunities via offensive rebounds. The team has a defensive second-chance conversion percentage of 4.6% vs. AO, which ranks 43rd-best in the nation.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When facing teams that are more proficient at draining the mid-range shot, UC Riverside often performs better than normal. UC Riverside is more efficient than usual 82% of the time when facing teams that have an offensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 37.54%. In their other contests, UC Riverside performs better than the norm 38% of the time.
UC Riverside does better vs. clubs that convert well from outside the arc. When playing squads that have an offensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 33.33%, UC Riverside performs above average 67% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 27% of the time.
UC Riverside performs worse against squads that typically allow more than a fair share of breakaway opportunities. When facing teams that have a potential point rate allowed off steals vs. AO greater than 10.93, UC Riverside is more efficient than normal 41% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 80% of the time.
