ANALYSIS: If you're looking for a squad in the bottom quartile of all Division I basketball teams this year, UC Riverside likely fits the bill. They have a record of 10-23 and are ranked 324th overall (out of 353) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. They are also ranked by this site as the #8 team (out of nine) in the Big West (average ranking 226.6).
Defense is not exactly a strength for UC Riverside this year. The team is ranked 324th in defensive efficiency and allows more than 112 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. UC Riverside allows the opposition far too many easy shots from the floor and ranks in the bottom-25 in three of our four major defensive field goal shooting categories. They are at their worst when defending outside the paint, allowing AO to convert 38.5% of their three-pointers (330th in the nation), 43.0% of their mid-range chances (third from the bottom), and 48.1% of their total shots from the field (330th). If UC Riverside does have a bright spot on defense, it would have to be their success stopping opponents from earning second-chance opportunities via offensive boards. The team has a rating of 10.97 in potential points allowed off of second chances vs. AO, which ranks 16th-best in college hoops.
UC Riverside doesn't rate much better on offense than they do on defense. Scoring roughly 94 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #307 in the nation in offensive efficiency. UC Riverside does an extremely poor job drawing fouls and getting to the free throw line. With a free throw attempt rate of just 16.78 vs. AO, they are last in the overall rankings for that category. UC Riverside is also one of the more deficient teams in the nation as it pertains to scoring off of offensive rebounds. Against AO, the team converts only 4.5% of all second-chance opportunities (307th nationally).
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When playing teams that do a nice job converting inside the paint, UC Riverside usually performs better than average. UC Riverside is more efficient than normal 70% of the time when facing clubs that have an offensive near-proximity field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 60.20%. In all other contests, UC Riverside performs better than average 25% of the time.
UC Riverside is typically better vs. teams that tend to allow more shots on the perimeter. Against foes that have a defensive shooting proximity score vs. AO greater than 2.00, UC Riverside performs above their norm 60% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 20% of the time.
When facing teams that are typically efficient on offense, UC Riverside often performs better than normal. UC Riverside is more efficient than usual 53% of the time when facing teams that have an offensive efficiency rating vs. AO greater than 98.08. In their other contests, UC Riverside performs better than the norm 18% of the time.
