ANALYSIS: When listing some of the better squads you will find in NCAA basketball this year, one can definitely make a case for UCLA. Ranked 15th overall (out of 357) in our most recent ratings, they presently have a record of 22-10. Of the 12 schools in the Pac-12 (average ranking 44.9), they're currently ranked as our #4 team in the conference. With a strength-of-schedule rating of 0.832 (which ranks fourth nationally), UCLA is one of the more battle-tested teams in the college game.
Utilizing a more deliberate, half-court style of play (the 13th-slowest pace in D1), UCLA is one of the very most competent offensive teams in the country. Ranked 15th in offensive efficiency, they'll rack up more than 113 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. UCLA is a very dangerous team when it comes to shooting the rock, ranking in the top-25 in three of our four major field goal categories. They can be considered sharpshooters out on the perimeter, converting 38.4% of their three-pointers (18th in the nation), 46.2% of their mid-range chances (ninth), and 48.8% of their total shots from the field (17th) vs. AO. UCLA also loves taking the mid-range two, far more so than most other teams. The club is ranked 13th in ratio of mid-range attempts to total field goal attempts.
UCLA plays at roughly the same level defensively as they do offensively. The team ranks 39th nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 92 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. UCLA does a fantastic job to prevent opposing teams from capitalizing on chances from offensive rebounds. The squad allows AO to convert only 3.1% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 13th in the NCAA), and with a rating of 9.93, they're 19th in potential points allowed off of the offensive glass as well. UCLA has also done a very good job to prevent opponents from draining threes this year. They rank 50th in the NCAA in defensive three-point percentage, allowing AO to make just 31.4% of their attempts from afar.
UCLA has been playing some of its most efficient basketball of the season recently and is presently ranked 17th in positive momentum.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
UCLA is typically better vs. teams that tend to get off more shots. Against foes that have an offensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO greater than 82.52, UCLA performs above their norm 60% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 24% of the time.
