ANALYSIS: Illinois is a moderately good team, capable of testing many an opponent that they'll encounter. They are ranked #50 (out of 363) in the most recent Haslametrics ratings and have a record of 20-13. They are also ranked by this site as the #8 team (out of 14) in the Big Ten (average ranking 57.0).
Illinois has a fairly effective defensive attack. Occupying the #33 slot in our defensive efficiency ratings, they will allow about 94 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. Illinois does tremendous work shutting down the opposition from the inside. They are ranked 19th in the country in defensive near-proximity percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 52.5% of their attempts from close-up. Illinois also boasts one of the better overall defensive field goal percentages in the country. The team ranks #42 nationally in field goal percentage allowed, as AO only makes good on about 40.5% of their total attempts from the floor.
Illinois is also a fairly decent team on the offensive end of the court. The team ranks 86th nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 108 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Illinois is one of the nation's most effective teams finishing close to the iron. The team is ranked 13th in the country in near-proximity field goal percentage, making approximately 66.2% of their attempts from up-close vs. AO. The team will attempt a fair amount of field goals from up-close, too. Approximately 38.1% of their attempts vs. AO are taken from near-proximity locations, which puts the team in the top-75 in that category nationally. Illinois also does a super job in their efforts to get to the free throw line. With a free throw attempt rate of 30.28 vs. AO, they are ranked 16th in the nation at getting to the charity stripe. Unfortunately, they don't convert a ton of their free throws and make just 68.6% of their attempts. If Illinois does have a weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's penchant for allowing too many easy buckets off of giveaways. The squad has a rating of 12.78 vs. AO in potential points allowed off of steals, which ranks 41st-worst in the college game.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When facing teams that fail to defend efficiently inside the paint, Illinois often performs better than normal. Illinois is more efficient than usual 92% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive near-proximity field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 56.96%. In their other contests, Illinois performs better than the norm 35% of the time.
Illinois does worse vs. clubs that are typically efficient on offense. When playing squads that have an offensive efficiency rating vs. AO greater than 107.89, Illinois performs above average 37% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 86% of the time.
Illinois performs worse against squads that are more proficient at draining the mid-range shot.
