ANALYSIS: Despite what their win percentage might indicate, Illinois is a good team that can cause more than enough trouble for most opponents. They have a record of 12-21 and are ranked 68th overall (out of 353) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. Of the 14 schools in the Big Ten (average ranking 37.8), they're currently ranked as our #12 team in the conference. With a strength-of-schedule rating of 0.783 (which ranks tenth nationally), Illinois is one of the more battle-tested teams in the college game.
The primary strength for Illinois this year is offense. The team is ranked 47th in efficiency on that end of the floor, and they'll rack up more than 110 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. Illinois fares better than most teams when it comes to converting from locations close to the basket. The team is ranked 65th in the country in near-proximity field goal percentage, making approximately 63.1% of their attempts from up-close vs. AO. Illinois has also been generally quite good when shooting the three-pointer. They're ranked 74th nationally in three-point field goal percentage and make about 36.5% of their attempts from there vs. AO.
Illinois is also a fairly decent team on the defensive end of the court. The team ranks 115th nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 101 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Illinois has extremely pesky defenders that ceaselessly attempt to deny opponents ample opportunity to shoot. The club is ranked tenth in Division I in defensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 77.92 vs. AO. Illinois also does a super job to deny opponents offensive rebounds and second chances. They have a rating of 10.78 vs. AO in potential points allowed off of second chances (ranked 14th in the country), and they allow AO to convert just 4.8% of their second-chance opportunities (ranked 46th) as well. If Illinois does exhibit a weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's tendency to send opponents to the line too much by fouling. The squad has a rating of 29.90 in defensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO, which ranks 44th-worst in the country.
Illinois has definitely not been as efficient as of late compared to earlier in the season and, consequently, the team is nationally ranked 331st in positive momentum. When playing on the road, Illinois performs somewhat worse than they normally do on their home court. The club is nationally ranked 321st in our site's away-from-home metric.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Illinois does worse vs. clubs that have trouble defending the mid-range shot. When playing squads that have a defensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 34.18%, Illinois performs above average 10% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 56% of the time.
Illinois performs worse against squads that do not defend well on the perimeter. When facing teams that have a defensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 31.53%, Illinois is more efficient than normal 30% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 70% of the time.
When playing teams that aren't terribly skilled defensively, Illinois usually performs worse than average. Illinois is more efficient than normal 29% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive efficiency rating vs. AO greater than 94.58. In all other contests, Illinois performs better than average 67% of the time.
