ANALYSIS: If you see California on the schedule, you will likely get one of the average to below-average teams in college hoops. Carrying a record of 8-23, they are currently rated #232 overall (out of 353) in All-Play Percentage this season. Of the 12 schools in the Pac-12 (average ranking 107.2), they're currently ranked as the worst team in the conference.
California will certainly not be one of the stingier defenses opponents will encounter. Allowing more than 110 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked down at #303 in defensive efficiency. California performs really badly when attempting to stop opponents from making mid-range jumpers. The squad is ranked 337th nationally in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on 41.8% of their attempts from those in-between spots on the floor. California also does a very lackluster job preventing opponents from draining threes. They rank 312th nationally in defensive three-point percentage, allowing AO to make 37.6% of their attempts from afar. And to expose that weakness, AO will gladly launch the three all day and all night. Of AO's total field goals, a large chunk of them (43.1%) will be from long-distance. If California does have a bright spot on defense, it would have to be their willingness to take risks in order to score fast points off of steals. The team has a solid rating of 14.08 in potential points scored off of steals vs. AO, which ranks 46th-best in college basketball.
Even though the team ranks considerably higher in offensive efficiency, California isn't a powerhouse on that end of the floor either. Scoring roughly 102 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #191 in the nation in offensive efficiency. California does a terrible job to take advantage of scoring chances off of offensive rebounds. Against AO, the team converts only 3.9% of all second-chance opportunities (342nd nationally), and with a rating of 9.71, they're 339th in potential points scored off of the offensive boards as well. California is also downright rotten when shooting the mid-range jumper. The team is ranked 336th in field goal percentage from that distance, making only 30.5% of their mid-range attempts vs. AO. If California does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's care for the ball. The squad has a rating of 8.83 in potential points allowed off of steals vs. AO, which ranks 16th in the college game.
California has been playing better basketball in their most recent outings, as evidenced by the team's #37 ranking in positive momentum. California has also been one of the more erratic teams in NCAA basketball this year (presently ranked 328th in the country in consistency), which makes forecasting the outcomes of their upcoming games tougher than most.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When facing teams that fail to defend efficiently inside the paint, California often performs worse than normal. California is more efficient than usual 22% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive near-proximity field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 60.53%. In their other contests, California performs better than the norm 73% of the time.
California does worse vs. clubs that allow opponents to shoot well from the field. When playing squads that have a defensive field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 42.26%, California performs above average 33% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 81% of the time.
California performs worse against squads that have trouble defending the mid-range shot. When facing teams that have a defensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 33.68%, California is more efficient than normal 46% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 89% of the time.
