ANALYSIS: If you're looking for a squad in the bottom quartile of all Division I basketball teams this year, Army likely fits the bill. Their record this season is 15-16, and the club is ranked 299th overall (out of 358) in Haslametrics' most recent ratings. Of the 10 schools in the Patriot League (average ranking 278.7), they're currently ranked as our #6 team in the conference. With a strength-of-schedule rating of 0.265 (which ranks 343rd nationally), Army has had one of the cushiest slates in all of college basketball.
Army is not one of the better offensive teams you will find. They are rated #309 in efficiency on that end of the court and only score about 93 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. Army has had serious struggles making their free throws this year. Converting just 64.2% of their attempts, the squad is ranked #349 overall in free throw percentage. Army also tends to be very careless with the ball and allows far too many breakaway opportunities off of their own turnovers. The team's rating for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals vs. AO is 13.73, which ranks 342nd in D1.
Army doesn't rate much better on defense than they do on offense. Allowing roughly 106 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #266 in the nation in defensive efficiency. Army gives up too many chances to easily score off of offensive rebounds. The team allows AO to convert 6.3% of all second-chance opportunities (314th nationally).
Army has been one of the most erratic teams in college basketball this year (currently ranked seventh from the bottom overall in consistency), which makes the outcomes of their future games far more difficult to predict. When playing on the road, Army performs somewhat worse than they normally do on their home court. The club is nationally ranked 315th in our site's away-from-home metric.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Army is typically better vs. teams that do not defend well on the perimeter. Against foes that have a defensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 33.92%, Army performs above their norm 67% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 29% of the time.
When facing teams that find ways to get to the free throw line, Army often performs better than normal. Army is more efficient than usual 69% of the time when facing teams that have an offensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 23.12. In their other contests, Army performs better than the norm 31% of the time.
