ANALYSIS: Despite what their win percentage might indicate, Stanford is a good team that can cause more than enough trouble for most opponents. They are ranked #53 (out of 357) in the most recent Haslametrics ratings and have a record of 14-13. Of the 12 schools in the Pac-12 (average ranking 44.9), they're currently ranked as our #8 team in the conference. Sporting a strength-of-schedule rating of 0.821 (the fifth-highest in the country), Stanford has prepared themselves by challenging some of the best teams in the college game.
Stanford will mainly try to find success through their defense. They are ranked 40th in defensive efficiency and allow fewer than 93 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Stanford does tremendous work shutting down the opposition from the inside. They are ranked 16th in the country in defensive near-proximity percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 52.6% of their attempts from close-up. Stanford is also a superior unit when it comes to preventing opponents from getting to the foul line. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 19.33 vs. AO, they are currently rated 17th in the country in that category.
Stanford is also a fairly decent team on the offensive end of the court. The team ranks 91st nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 104 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Stanford will routinely look to penetrate, pound the ball inside, and score from as short a distance as possible. The ball-club is sixth in the NCAA in ratio of near-proximity attempts to total field goal attempts. If you do allow them to get to the inside, they are undoubtedly capable of making you pay. Presently rated in the top-75 in near-proximity shooting percentage, they make roughly 63.5% of their attempts from short-distance vs. AO. Stanford is also one of the best field goal shooting teams that opposing defenses will have the displeasure of facing this season. The squad is ranked 14th in the country in field goal percentage, making approximately 49.0% of their attempts vs. AO. If Stanford does have a glaring weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's difficulties in getting off a sufficient number of shots each possession. The squad has a field goal attempt rate of just 77.74 vs. AO, which ranks 20th-worst in college basketball.
Stanford has definitely not been as efficient as of late compared to earlier in the season and, consequently, the team is nationally ranked 346th in positive momentum.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Stanford performs better against squads that have trouble defending the mid-range shot. When facing teams that have a defensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 36.16%, Stanford is more efficient than normal 88% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 32% of the time.
When playing teams that allow more chances at the line, Stanford usually performs better than average. Stanford is more efficient than normal 67% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 21.41. In all other contests, Stanford performs better than average 11% of the time.
Stanford is typically worse vs. teams that shoot the ball well from the field. Against foes that have an offensive field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 48.80%, Stanford performs above their norm 13% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 63% of the time.
