ANALYSIS: They may not cause sleepless nights for opponents, but Stanford, as a slightly above-average team, cannot be totally ignored. Their record this season is 15-16, and the club is ranked 121st overall (out of 353) in Haslametrics' most recent ratings. They are also ranked by this site as the #9 team (out of 12) in the Pac-12 (average ranking 107.2).
The primary strength for Stanford is defense. The team is ranked 97th in efficiency, allowing fewer than 100 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Stanford does tremendous work shutting down the opposition from the inside. They are ranked 12th in the country in defensive near-proximity percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 51.3% of their attempts from close-up. And to capitalize on that weakness, this team will make AO shoot from the inside more than they usually would. Of AO's total field goals, a big portion of them (41.2%) will be from short-distance. If Stanford does exhibit a weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's propensity to allow too many shot attempts per trip. The squad has a rating of 86.55 in defensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO, which ranks 50th-worst in college basketball.
Stanford is also a fairly decent team on the offensive end of the court. The team ranks 174th nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 103 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Stanford will routinely look to penetrate, pound the ball inside, and score from as short a distance as possible. The ball-club is second in the NCAA in ratio of near-proximity attempts to total field goal attempts. As far as converting those near-proximity shots goes, the team shoots 60.4% vs. AO, which falls somewhere in the middle of the pack of the rankings in that category. Stanford also does a really good job to acquire opportunities from the free throw line. With a free throw attempt rate of 29.96 vs. AO, they are ranked 39th in the nation at getting to the charity stripe. Unfortunately, they don't convert a ton of their free throws and make just 66.5% of their attempts.
When playing on the road, Stanford performs somewhat worse than they normally do on their home court. The club is nationally ranked 322nd in our site's away-from-home metric.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Stanford does better vs. clubs that are more proficient at draining the mid-range shot. When playing squads that have an offensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 35.04%, Stanford performs above average 56% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 13% of the time.
Stanford performs better against squads that typically allow more than a fair share of breakaway opportunities. When facing teams that have a potential point rate allowed off steals vs. AO greater than 11.17, Stanford is more efficient than normal 56% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 13% of the time.
When playing teams that are likely to allow more second chances off of offensive rebounds, Stanford usually performs worse than average. Stanford is more efficient than normal 24% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive second-chance potential point rate vs. AO greater than 12.77. In all other contests, Stanford performs better than average 60% of the time.
