ANALYSIS: When you talk about the elite teams in college basketball this year, Alabama most definitely is in the conversation. Their record this season is 31-6, and the club is ranked third overall (out of 363) in Haslametrics' most recent ratings. They are also ranked by this site as the best team (out of 14) in the SEC (average ranking 78.8). Sporting a strength-of-schedule rating of 0.737 (the tenth-highest in the country), Alabama has prepared themselves by challenging some of the best teams in the college game.
Alabama will suffocate most opponents with its stifling defense. Allowing roughly 87 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO and exhibiting a preference for a very up-tempo style of play (the 15th-fastest pace in D1), this squad is rated #2 in defensive efficiency. Alabama will wreak havoc with many opponents' shooting percentages this year. And it doesn't really matter where the shots originate; the team ranks in the top-25 in each of the four major defensive shooting categories. They allow AO to make just 28.8% of their three-pointers (third in the nation), 33.1% of their mid-range shots (13th), 46.6% of their near-proximity attempts (first), and 35.8% of their total shots from the field (first). Alabama also does a fantastic job to prevent opposing teams from capitalizing on chances from offensive rebounds. The squad allows AO to convert only 3.1% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked fifth in the NCAA), and with a rating of 10.94, they're 20th in potential points allowed off of the offensive glass as well.
Alabama plays at about the same level on offense as they do on defense. The team ranks 20th nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 114 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Alabama lives and dies by the three-ball and will launch from long-distance early and often. The team ranks 12th in ratio of three-point attempts to total field goal attempts. When it comes to actually making their three-point attempts, the squad shoots a so-so 34.5% from beyond the arc vs. AO. Alabama also does a really good job to acquire opportunities from the free throw line. With a free throw attempt rate of 29.40 vs. AO, they are ranked 30th in the nation at getting to the charity stripe, where the team shoots a rather mediocre 71.8%.
Alabama has been one of the more erratic teams in NCAA basketball this year (presently ranked 338th in the country in consistency), which makes forecasting the outcomes of their upcoming games tougher than most. When playing on the road, Alabama performs somewhat worse than they normally do on their home court. The club is nationally ranked 322nd in our site's away-from-home metric.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
