ANALYSIS: Cleveland State is not one of the better teams in Division I this year. Their record this season is 11-21, and the club is ranked 314th overall (out of 353) in Haslametrics' most recent ratings. Of the 10 schools in the Horizon League (average ranking 240.5), they're currently ranked as our #9 team in the conference.
Offense comes as a real struggle to Cleveland State this year. The team is rated 336th in offensive efficiency and scores fewer than 89 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Cleveland State is one of the least accurate teams when shooting from long-distance. They are ranked 337th in three-point field goal percentage nationally and make just 29.0% of their attempts from long vs. AO. Cleveland State also won't provide opponents much of a scare with their shooting percentage from the inside. The team is ranked 324th in near-proximity field goal percentage, making only 52.7% of their attempts from up-close vs. AO. If Cleveland State does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's knack for obtaining second-chance opportunities from offensive rebounds. The squad has a rating of 15.88 in potential points off of second chances vs. AO, which ranks 44th in all of college hoops.
Though they rate better on defense than they do on offense, Cleveland State still isn't one of the more capable defensive teams in college hoops. Allowing roughly 103 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #260 in the nation in defensive efficiency. Cleveland State gives up far too many offensive rebounds and second chances to their opponents. The club has a rating of 16.48 vs. AO in potential points allowed off of second chances (335th nationally), and they let AO convert a healthy 6.7% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 320th) as well.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Cleveland State is typically better vs. teams that favor a faster tempo. Against foes that have a pace vs. AO greater than 69.57, Cleveland State performs above their norm 84% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 25% of the time.
When facing teams that allow opponents to shoot well from the field, Cleveland State often performs better than normal. Cleveland State is more efficient than usual 92% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 44.09%. In their other contests, Cleveland State performs better than the norm 39% of the time.
Cleveland State does better vs. clubs that fail to defend efficiently inside the paint. When playing squads that have a defensive near-proximity field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 58.36%, Cleveland State performs above average 80% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 27% of the time.
