ANALYSIS: Regardless of what the win percentage says, Coast. Carolina isn't a very good team this year. Ranked 194th overall (out of 357) in our most recent ratings, they presently have a record of 18-8. Of the 12 schools in the Sun Belt (average ranking 233.9), they're currently ranked as our #4 team in the conference.
If there is a strength for Coast. Carolina this year, it's probably on the defensive end of the court. The team is rated 149th in defensive efficiency, allowing fewer than 99 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. Coast. Carolina makes a point to avoid fouls and prevent opponents from getting to the free throw line. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 21.49 vs. AO, they are currently rated 62nd in the country in that category. If Coast. Carolina does exhibit a weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's propensity to allow too many shot attempts per trip. The squad has a rating of 85.77 in defensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO, which ranks 38th-worst in college basketball.
The offense for Coast. Carolina, on the other hand, isn't nearly as efficient as the defense is. The team is ranked 253rd in offensive efficiency, scoring about 95 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Coast. Carolina tends to be very careless with the ball and allows far too many breakaway opportunities off of their own turnovers. The team's rating for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals vs. AO is 14.68, which ranks 340th in D1. Coast. Carolina also needs improvement when it comes to draining the mid-range shot. The team is ranked 327th in field goal percentage from that distance, making only 32.8% of their mid-range attempts vs. AO. If Coast. Carolina does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's knack for obtaining second-chance opportunities from offensive rebounds. The squad has a rating of 16.62 in potential points off of second chances vs. AO, which ranks 29th in all of college hoops.
Coast. Carolina is one of the more consistent teams in Division I (presently ranked 48th in consistency), so forecasting the outcomes of their future contests tends to be easier than the norm.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
