ANALYSIS: Regardless of what the win percentage says, Lafayette isn't a very good team this year. Carrying a record of 19-12, they are currently rated #244 overall (out of 353) in All-Play Percentage this season. Of the 10 schools in the Patriot League (average ranking 251.9), they're currently ranked as our #4 team in the conference.
Lafayette will certainly not be one of the stingier defenses opponents will encounter. Allowing more than 103 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked down at #265 in defensive efficiency. Lafayette allows the opposition to get off far too many shots from the floor. The team is ranked last in the nation in defensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 89.56 vs. AO. Lafayette is also extremely underskilled to force steals that turn into quick and easy points. They're ranked #352 in potential points off of breakaway steals with a rating of only 6.29 vs. AO. Lafayette lastly performs really badly when attempting to stop opponents from making mid-range jumpers. The squad is ranked third from the bottom nationally in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on 46.8% of their attempts from those in-between spots on the floor. If Lafayette does have a bright spot on defense, it would have to be their success stopping opponents from converting from locations near the basket. AO will convert just 51.3% of their near-proximity field goal attempts, and the team ranks 12th-best in the country in that category as a result.
Lafayette doesn't rate much better on offense than they do on defense. Scoring roughly 96 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #221 in the nation in offensive efficiency. Lafayette does an extremely poor job drawing fouls and getting to the free throw line. With a free throw attempt rate of just 20.18 vs. AO, they are 335th in the overall rankings for that category. Lafayette also does a fairly poor job cleaning the offensive glass. Against AO, the ball-club has a rating of 10.17 in potential points scored off of second chances (307th nationally). If Lafayette does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's ability to successfully hit from mid-range locations on the court. The team makes 43.6% of their in-between field goal attempts vs. AO, which ranks sixth in the NCAA.
Lafayette has been playing some of their worst basketball of the season as of late, and they're presently ranked 342nd in positive momentum because of it. On the road, Lafayette performs somewhat better than their norm, as the squad is nationally ranked 28th in our away-from-home metric.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Lafayette is typically better vs. teams that typically allow more than a fair share of breakaway opportunities. Against foes that have a potential point rate allowed off steals vs. AO greater than 11.48, Lafayette performs above their norm 70% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 30% of the time.
When facing teams that tend to capitalize off breakaway opportunities, Lafayette often performs worse than normal. Lafayette is more efficient than usual 45% of the time when facing teams that have a potential point rate off steals vs. AO greater than 8.56. In their other contests, Lafayette performs better than the norm 80% of the time.
