ANALYSIS: Regardless of what the win percentage says, Lafayette isn't a very good team this year. Haslametrics has them ranked 221st overall (out of 351) in All-Play Percentage, and the team holds a record of 20-13. Of the 10 schools in the Patriot League (average ranking 235.6), they're currently ranked as our #5 team in the conference.
Lafayette succeeds primarily through their offense. They are ranked 56th in offensive efficiency and score in excess of 107 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Lafayette is an excellent shooting team, capable of converting from multiple locations on the court and ranking in the top-50 in three of our four primary field goal categories. They can be considered sharpshooters out on the perimeter, converting 38.8% of their three-pointers (22nd in the nation), 40.2% of their mid-range chances (15th), and 46.7% of their total shots from the field (32nd) vs. AO. Lafayette also does a really good job converting from the free throw line. Making 75.1% of their attempts from the stripe, they are ranked 26th nationally in free throw percentage. Though they typically convert their shots from the line, the downside is that they hardly ever manage to get there. The squad has a free throw attempt rate of 23.73 vs. AO (24th-worst in the nation).
Sadly for Lafayette, the drop-off from offensive efficiency to defensive efficiency is massive. The team is ranked 341st in defensive efficiency, allowing about 113 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Lafayette allows the opposition to get off far too many shots from the floor. The team is ranked last in the nation in defensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 89.65 vs. AO. Lafayette also gives up far too many offensive rebounds and second chances to their opponents. The club has a rating of 18.36 vs. AO in potential points allowed off of second chances (333rd nationally), and they let AO convert a healthy 8.6% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 316th) as well. Lafayette lastly allows opposing teams far too many easy chances from the floor, ranking in the bottom-50 in three of the four main defensive field goal shooting categories. They are at their worst when defending outside the paint, allowing AO to convert 37.9% of their three-pointers (324th in the nation), 40.3% of their mid-range chances (332nd), and 47.0% of their total shots from the field (318th). If Lafayette does have a bright spot on defense, it would have to be their success preventing opponents from getting to the free throw line. The team has a defensive free throw attempt rate of 23.74 vs. AO, which ranks 24th-best in the country.
Lafayette has been one of the most erratic teams in college basketball this year (currently ranked 336th overall in consistency), which makes the outcomes of their future games far more difficult to predict.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When facing teams that do not defend well on the perimeter, Lafayette often performs better than normal. Lafayette is more efficient than usual 71% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 34.62%. In their other contests, Lafayette performs better than the norm 18% of the time.
Lafayette does better vs. clubs that favor a faster tempo. When playing squads that have a pace vs. AO greater than 64.52, Lafayette performs above average 68% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 20% of the time.
Lafayette performs better against squads that aren't terribly skilled defensively. When facing teams that have a defensive efficiency rating vs. AO greater than 102.49, Lafayette is more efficient than normal 68% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 20% of the time.
