ANALYSIS: There aren't many teams in the country that have been as strong as San Diego State this year. Their record this season is 30-2, and the club is ranked sixth overall (out of 353) in Haslametrics' most recent ratings. Of the 11 schools in the MWC (average ranking 131.7), they're currently ranked as the best team in the conference.
San Diego State showcases one of the country's most efficient offenses. Racking up about 112 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO and promoting a more deliberate, half-court style of play (the 19th-slowest pace in D1), the team is nationally rated tenth in efficiency on that end of the floor. San Diego State is deadly accurate at the free throw line. Making 79.6% of their attempts from the stripe, they are ranked sixth nationally in free throw percentage. San Diego State is also one of the most accurate teams when shooting from long-distance. They're ranked sixth nationally in three-point field goal percentage and make about 38.6% of their attempts from there vs. AO. The team will try to shoot a fair amount of threes, too. Roughly 41.3% of their field goal attempts vs. AO are from long, giving the team a top-75 ranking in that category. The team likewise falls in the top-50 in overall offensive field goal percentage, converting about 46.8% of their attempts vs. AO.
San Diego State plays at roughly the same level defensively as they do offensively. The team ranks 15th nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 89 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. San Diego State will take a bite out of many opponents' shooting percentages, based on the fact that the team ranks in the top-50 in three of our four primary defensive field goal categories. They'll inflict the most harm on the outside, allowing AO to convert just 30.5% of their three-pointers (39th in the nation), 33.5% of their mid-range chances (42nd), and 39.2% of their total shots from the field (21st). San Diego State also does a pretty solid job avoiding careless fouls and minimizing opponents' opportunities from the free throw line. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 20.95 vs. AO, they are currently rated 30th in the country in that category.
San Diego State has definitely not been as efficient as of late compared to earlier in the season and, consequently, the team is nationally ranked 334th in positive momentum. San Diego State has also been one of the most erratic teams in college basketball this year (currently ranked sixth from the bottom overall in consistency), which makes the outcomes of their future games far more difficult to predict. When playing on the road, San Diego State has played their best basketball this season. The team is currently ranked second in the country in the away-from-home metric our site tracks.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
San Diego State performs better against squads that do a nice job converting inside the paint. When facing teams that have an offensive near-proximity field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 61.27%, San Diego State is more efficient than normal 100% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 32% of the time.
When playing teams that aren't terribly skilled defensively, San Diego State usually performs worse than average. San Diego State is more efficient than normal 20% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive efficiency rating vs. AO greater than 100.07. In all other contests, San Diego State performs better than average 67% of the time.
San Diego State is typically better vs. teams that favor a faster tempo. Against foes that have a pace vs. AO greater than 70.18, San Diego State performs above their norm 71% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 29% of the time.
