ANALYSIS: Idaho State has a squad that most likely falls somewhere in the bottom half of NCAA Division I teams this year. They are ranked #247 (out of 363) in the most recent Haslametrics ratings and have a record of 11-21. Of the 10 schools in the Big Sky (average ranking 204.9), they're currently ranked as our #8 team in the conference.
Defense is not exactly a strength for Idaho State this year. The team is ranked 288th in defensive efficiency and allows more than 108 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. Idaho State does not stand out in a positive manner when they're asked to defend in the paint. The team is ranked 284th in the country in defensive near-proximity percentage, allowing AO to make good on 61.9% of their attempts from close-up. And with such little resistance, AO will merrily cut, slash, and drive right to the hoop as often as possible. Of AO's total field goals, a big portion of them (38.6%) will be from short-distance. If Idaho State does have a bright spot on defense, it would have to be their success stopping opponents from earning second-chance opportunities via offensive boards. The team has a rating of 12.23 in potential points allowed off of second chances vs. AO, which ranks 50th-best in college hoops.
Idaho State doesn't rate much better on offense than they do on defense. Scoring roughly 99 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #257 in the nation in offensive efficiency. Idaho State does an extremely poor job drawing fouls and getting to the free throw line. With a free throw attempt rate of just 20.57 vs. AO, they are 350th in the overall rankings for that category. If Idaho State does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's ability to successfully hit from mid-range locations on the court. The team makes 43.8% of their in-between field goal attempts vs. AO, which ranks 12th in the NCAA.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Idaho State does worse vs. clubs that tend to capitalize off breakaway opportunities. When playing squads that have a potential point rate off steals vs. AO greater than 9.87, Idaho State performs above average 10% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 65% of the time.
Idaho State performs worse against squads that allow a higher number of conversions off of the offensive glass. When facing teams that have a defensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 5.09%, Idaho State is more efficient than normal 30% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 80% of the time.
When playing teams that favor a faster tempo, Idaho State usually performs worse than average. Idaho State is more efficient than normal 28% of the time when facing clubs that have a pace vs. AO greater than 67.02. In all other contests, Idaho State performs better than average 75% of the time.
