ANALYSIS: UT Rio Grande has a squad that most likely falls somewhere in the bottom half of NCAA Division I teams this year. Carrying a record of 14-16, they are currently rated #238 overall (out of 353) in All-Play Percentage this season. Of the nine schools in the WAC (average ranking 236.0), they're currently ranked as our #5 team in the conference.
Though their defense is far from abysmal, UT Rio Grande is not really proficient on that end of the court either. Allowing about 102 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO, they are ranked #247 in defensive efficiency. UT Rio Grande fouls far too much and sends the opposition to the line way too often. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 31.75 vs. AO, the squad is ranked #336 in the country in that category. UT Rio Grande also does an extremely poor job to deny the opposition behind the arc. They rank 336th nationally in defensive three-point percentage, allowing AO to make 37.1% of their attempts from afar. If UT Rio Grande does have a bright spot on defense, it would have to be their ability to limit the number of shot attempts by the opposition. The team has a defensive field goal attempt rate of 74.60 vs. AO, which ranks eighth-best in college basketball.
UT Rio Grande doesn't rate much better on offense than they do on defense. Scoring roughly 96 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #230 in the nation in offensive efficiency. UT Rio Grande fares worse than most teams when it comes to converting from locations close to the hoop. The team is ranked 295th in near-proximity field goal percentage, making only 54.6% of their attempts from up-close vs. AO.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
