ANALYSIS: They're far from the worst of the worst, but Indiana State should not be a terribly frightening opponent for most clubs. Haslametrics has them ranked 188th overall (out of 358) in All-Play Percentage, and the team holds a record of 11-20. Of the 10 schools in the MVC (average ranking 128.7), they're currently ranked as our #8 team in the conference.
Offensively, Indiana State finds itself in the lower half of the rankings. The team is rated 220th in offensive efficiency and scores fewer than 99 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. Indiana State does a terrible job to take advantage of scoring chances off of offensive rebounds. Against AO, the team converts only 3.3% of all second-chance opportunities (337th nationally), and with a rating of 10.10, they're 331st in potential points scored off of the offensive boards as well. Indiana State is also one of the more inferior teams in the college game when it comes to maximizing opportunities to score on offense. The team is nationally ranked 322nd in offensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of only 80.79 vs. AO. If Indiana State does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's ability to successfully hit from mid-range locations on the court. The team makes 44.6% of their in-between field goal attempts vs. AO, which ranks seventh in the NCAA.
Indiana State doesn't rate much better on defense than they do on offense. Allowing roughly 103 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #206 in the nation in defensive efficiency. Indiana State tends to struggle a bit against teams that shoot the three. They rank 282nd nationally in defensive three-point percentage, allowing AO to make 35.3% of their attempts from afar. If Indiana State does have a bright spot on defense, it would have to be their success stopping opponents from earning second-chance opportunities via offensive boards. The team has a rating of 10.25 in potential points allowed off of second chances vs. AO, which ranks 26th-best in college hoops.
Indiana State has been one of the most erratic teams in college basketball this year (currently ranked 345th overall in consistency), which makes the outcomes of their future games far more difficult to predict.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Indiana State is typically worse vs. teams that have trouble defending the mid-range shot. Against foes that have a defensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 36.40%, Indiana State performs above their norm 20% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 75% of the time.
When facing teams that allow opponents to shoot well from the field, Indiana State often performs worse than normal. Indiana State is more efficient than usual 17% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 41.67%. In their other contests, Indiana State performs better than the norm 70% of the time.
Indiana State does worse vs. clubs that allow a higher number of conversions off of the offensive glass. When playing squads that have a defensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 4.80%, Indiana State never performs above average. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 50% of the time.
