ANALYSIS: Not one of the better ball-clubs in college basketball, Incarnate Word should be a fairly easy win for most capable opponents. They have a record of 9-22 and are ranked 338th overall (out of 353) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. They are also ranked by this site as the worst team (out of 13) in the Southland (average ranking 253.4).
Offense comes as a real struggle to Incarnate Word this year. The team is rated 338th in offensive efficiency and scores fewer than 89 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Incarnate Word does an extremely poor job drawing fouls and getting to the free throw line. With a free throw attempt rate of just 19.85 vs. AO, they are 339th in the overall rankings for that category. Incarnate Word also struggles to drain shots consistently from most spots on the floor, ranking in the bottom-50 in three of the four primary field goal shooting categories. They only convert 30.2% of their three-pointers (318th in the nation), 53.9% of their near-proximity attempts (305th), and 39.7% of their total shots from the field (326th) vs. AO.
Incarnate Word doesn't rate much better on defense than they do on offense. Allowing roughly 110 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #332 in the nation in defensive efficiency. Incarnate Word is one of the very worst teams in the country in terms of overall defensive field goal percentage. The ball-club ranks #336 nationally in field goal percentage allowed, as AO will convert approximately 47.8% of their total attempts from the floor. Incarnate Word has also done a pretty poor job this season to prevent opponents from making shots from the inside. The team is ranked 308th in the country in defensive near-proximity percentage, allowing AO to make good on 63.9% of their attempts from close-up. And with such little resistance, AO will merrily cut, slash, and drive right to the hoop as often as possible. Of AO's total field goals, a big portion of them (41.0%) will be from short-distance.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Incarnate Word performs better against squads that are more proficient at draining the mid-range shot. When facing teams that have an offensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 37.30%, Incarnate Word is more efficient than normal 100% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 42% of the time.
When playing teams that have trouble defending the mid-range shot, Incarnate Word usually performs better than average. Incarnate Word is more efficient than normal 80% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 39.44%. In all other contests, Incarnate Word performs better than average 39% of the time.
Incarnate Word is typically worse vs. teams that tend to get off more shots. Against foes that have an offensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO greater than 81.40, Incarnate Word performs above their norm 33% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 74% of the time.
