ANALYSIS: Pacific has a squad that most likely falls somewhere in the bottom half of NCAA Division I teams this year. They are ranked #203 (out of 351) in the most recent Haslametrics ratings and have a record of 8-20. Of the 10 schools in the WCC (average ranking 151.3), they're currently ranked as our #7 team in the conference.
Based on their performances this year, Pacific will likely find more success on defense than they will on offense. Allowing about 103 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO, they currently occupy the #175 slot in the ratings for defensive efficiency. Pacific does a really good job to prevent opponents from getting off shots from the field. The club is ranked 42nd in Division I in defensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 78.29 vs. AO. Pacific has also done a really good job this year to prevent opponents from making shots from the inside. They are ranked 46th in the country in defensive near-proximity percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 54.6% of their attempts from close-up. If Pacific does exhibit a noticeable weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's tendency to send opponents to the line too much by fouling. The squad has a rating of 36.67 in defensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO, which ranks fourth-worst in the country.
Pacific is not quite as good on the offensive end of the floor. The team is ranked 225th in offensive efficiency, scoring about 98 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Pacific happens to be one of the very worst in the game when it comes to maximizing the number of shot attempts they get off from the floor. The team is nationally ranked 339th in offensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of only 77.20 vs. AO. If Pacific does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's ability to successfully hit from mid-range locations on the court. The team makes 41.3% of their in-between field goal attempts vs. AO, which ranks 15th in the NCAA.
Pacific is one of the more consistent teams in Division I (presently ranked 34th in consistency), so forecasting the outcomes of their future contests tends to be easier than the norm.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Pacific is typically worse vs. teams that allow more chances at the line. Against foes that have a defensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 28.47, Pacific performs above their norm 29% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 75% of the time.
When facing teams that are more proficient at draining the mid-range shot, Pacific often performs better than normal. Pacific is more efficient than usual 78% of the time when facing teams that have an offensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 38.70%. In their other contests, Pacific performs better than the norm 35% of the time.
Pacific does better vs. clubs that tend to get off more shots. When playing squads that have an offensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO greater than 82.31, Pacific performs above average 67% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 27% of the time.
