ANALYSIS: Regardless of what the win percentage says, Cal Baptist isn't a very good team this year. They are ranked #217 (out of 353) in the most recent Haslametrics ratings and have a record of 21-10. Of the nine schools in the WAC (average ranking 236.0), they're currently ranked as our #3 team in the conference.
Cal Baptist will likely rely on their offense more than anything else to win games. The team is ranked 147th in offensive efficiency and scores more than 100 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Cal Baptist is deadly accurate at the free throw line. Making 79.6% of their attempts from the stripe, they are ranked seventh nationally in free throw percentage. Unfortunately, with a free throw attempt rate of just 22.84 vs. AO, they don't provide themselves a whole lot of opportunities at the foul line. Cal Baptist also has one of the better squads in the college game when it comes to maximizing opportunities to score. The team is ranked 33rd in the NCAA in offensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 85.44 vs. AO. Conversely, the squad isn't all that good at draining those shots, converting about 40.8% of their total attempts vs. AO. If Cal Baptist does have a glaring weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's troubles converting from the inside. The squad makes just 51.5% of their near-proximity field goal attempts vs. AO, which ranks 16th-worst in Division I.
The defense for Cal Baptist, on the other hand, isn't nearly as efficient as the offense is. The team is ranked 295th in defensive efficiency, allowing about 105 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Cal Baptist struggles on occasion to deny opponents opportunities to shoot from the floor. The team is ranked 322nd in the nation in defensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 85.84 vs. AO. Cal Baptist also does a pretty inadequate job to provide chances for themselves to score quickly off of steals. They're ranked #309 in potential points off of breakaway steals with a rating of only 8.43 vs. AO.
Cal Baptist has recently performed below their norm from an efficiency standpoint. The team is currently ranked 327th in the country in positive momentum. Cal Baptist has also been one of the most erratic teams in college basketball this year (currently ranked 343rd overall in consistency), which makes the outcomes of their future games far more difficult to predict.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When facing teams that do a nice job converting inside the paint, Cal Baptist often performs worse than normal. Cal Baptist is more efficient than usual 11% of the time when facing teams that have an offensive near-proximity field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 57.91%. In their other contests, Cal Baptist performs better than the norm 78% of the time.
Cal Baptist does worse vs. clubs that shoot the ball well from the field. When playing squads that have an offensive field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 42.98%, Cal Baptist performs above average 18% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 81% of the time.
Cal Baptist performs better against squads that allow more chances at the line. When facing teams that have a defensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 27.16, Cal Baptist is more efficient than normal 72% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 22% of the time.
