ANALYSIS: Wisconsin is one of the teams in the upper echelon of college basketball this year. Haslametrics has them ranked 11th overall (out of 364) in All-Play Percentage, and the team holds a record of 27-10. Of the 18 schools in the Big Ten (average ranking 42.1), they're currently ranked as our #3 team in the conference. Sporting a strength-of-schedule rating of 0.747 (the 22nd-highest in the country), Wisconsin has prepared themselves by challenging some of the best teams in the college game.
Wisconsin will create problems for opponents with their extremely prolific offense. Scoring roughly 125 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO, the squad is rated #12 in offensive efficiency. Wisconsin is deadly accurate at the free throw line. Making 83.7% of their attempts from the stripe, they are ranked first nationally in free throw percentage. Moreover, they get ample opportunity to beat you from the line, as the ball-club falls in the top-50 in free throw attempt rate with a rating of 31.80 vs. AO. Wisconsin also allows very few breakaway opportunities for the opposition, which typically translates to fewer turnovers. The team's rating vs. AO for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals is 8.94, which ranks #15 in the country. Wisconsin is lastly an excellent shooting team, capable of converting from multiple locations on the court and ranking in the top-50 in three of our four primary field goal categories. They are most proficient from two-point range, making good on 43.9% of their mid-range jumpers (16th in the nation), 64.1% of their near-proximity chances (39th), and 47.8% of their total shots from the field (35th) vs. AO.
Wisconsin plays at roughly the same level defensively as they do offensively. The team ranks 18th nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 96 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Wisconsin does a fantastic job to prevent opposing teams from capitalizing on chances from offensive rebounds. The squad allows AO to convert only 3.5% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked second in the NCAA), and with a rating of 12.57, they're 45th in potential points allowed off of the offensive glass as well. Wisconsin also does a bang-up job preventing the opposition from draining jumpers in between the three-point line and the low post. They're ranked third in Division I in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 29.1% of their attempts from that distance. To capitalize on that weakness, this team will make AO shoot from mid-range locations more than they usually would. Of AO's total field goals, a large portion of them (31.0%) will be from mid-range. Wisconsin is lastly one of the very best in the land in overall defensive field goal percentage. The team ranks #12 nationally in field goal percentage allowed, as AO only makes good on about 38.0% of their total attempts from the floor. If Wisconsin does exhibit a weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's unwillingness to take risks in order to score fast points off of the opposition's turnovers. The squad only has a rating of 9.27 in potential points scored off of steals vs. AO, which ranks 44th-worst in the college game.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:

When playing teams that are likely to allow more second chances off of offensive rebounds, Wisconsin usually performs better than average. Wisconsin is more efficient than normal 67% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive second-chance potential point rate vs. AO greater than 14.67. In all other contests, Wisconsin performs better than average 32% of the time.
