ANALYSIS: A borderline top-25 caliber adversary, Wisconsin will likely be a stiff test for any team in Division I. Ranked 26th overall (out of 353) in our most recent ratings, they presently have a record of 21-10. They are also ranked by this site as the #10 team (out of 14) in the Big Ten (average ranking 36.9). With a strength-of-schedule rating of 0.764 (which ranks ninth nationally), Wisconsin is one of the more battle-tested teams in the college game.
The Wisconsin defense will be extremely problematic for most opposing offenses. Allowing about 90 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO and demonstrating a preference for a more deliberate, half-court style of play (the 14th-slowest pace in D1), the club is ranked 21st overall in defensive efficiency. Wisconsin will take a bite out of many opponents' shooting percentages, based on the fact that the team ranks in the top-50 in three of our four primary defensive field goal categories. They're most likely to shut you down inside the three-point arc, considering the team limits AO to converting just 31.8% of their mid-range jumpers (14th in the nation), 53.8% of their near-proximity chances (40th), and 39.3% of their total shots from the field (25th). Wisconsin is also a superior unit when it comes to preventing opponents from getting to the foul line. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 20.08 vs. AO, they are currently rated 22nd in the country in that category. If Wisconsin does exhibit a noticeable weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's unwillingness to take risks in order to score fast points off of the opposition's turnovers. The squad only has a rating of 7.27 in potential points scored off of steals vs. AO, which ranks sixth-worst in the college game.
Wisconsin plays at about the same level on offense as they do on defense. The team ranks 35th nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 108 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Wisconsin is superb at converting jumpers in between the three-point stripe and the low post. The squad is ranked 16th nationally in mid-range field goal percentage, making about 42.1% of their attempts from those locations vs. AO. Wisconsin is also one of the most accurate teams when shooting from long-distance. They're ranked 24th nationally in three-point field goal percentage and make about 37.2% of their attempts from there vs. AO. The team will try to shoot a fair amount of threes, too. Roughly 43.9% of their field goal attempts vs. AO are from long, giving the team a top-50 ranking in that category.
Wisconsin has been one of the most erratic teams in college basketball this year (currently ranked third from the bottom overall in consistency), which makes the outcomes of their future games far more difficult to predict. When playing on the road, Wisconsin performs somewhat worse than they normally do on their home court. The club is nationally ranked 317th in our site's away-from-home metric.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Wisconsin does worse vs. clubs that fail to defend efficiently inside the paint. When playing squads that have a defensive near-proximity field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 55.32%, Wisconsin performs above average 20% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 81% of the time.
Wisconsin performs better against squads that find ways to get to the free throw line. When facing teams that have an offensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 28.47, Wisconsin is more efficient than normal 89% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 36% of the time.
When playing teams that allow opponents to shoot well from the field, Wisconsin usually performs worse than average. Wisconsin is more efficient than normal 23% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 40.43%. In all other contests, Wisconsin performs better than average 72% of the time.
