ANALYSIS: Despite what their win percentage might indicate, Xavier is a good team that can cause more than enough trouble for most opponents. Haslametrics has them ranked 64th overall (out of 353) in All-Play Percentage, and the team holds a record of 19-16. Of the 10 schools in the Big East (average ranking 76.5), they're currently ranked as our #5 team in the conference.
The primary strength for Xavier is defense. The team is ranked 77th in efficiency, allowing fewer than 99 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Xavier is a superior unit when it comes to preventing opponents from getting to the foul line. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 20.32 vs. AO, they are currently rated 11th in the country in that category. Xavier has also done a really good job this year to prevent opponents from making shots from the inside. They are ranked 44th in the country in defensive near-proximity percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 54.8% of their attempts from close-up.
Xavier plays at about the same level on offense as they do on defense. The team ranks 84th nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 108 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Xavier does an outstanding job finishing any scoring chances they obtain from offensive rebounds. Against AO, the team successfully converts 8.8% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked seventh nationally), and with a rating of 16.72, they're 38th in potential points scored off of the offensive glass as well. Xavier is also an excellent shooting team, capable of converting from multiple locations on the court and ranking in the top-50 in three of our four primary field goal categories. They are most proficient from two-point range, making good on 40.1% of their mid-range jumpers (31st in the nation), 64.8% of their near-proximity chances (40th), and 46.8% of their total shots from the field (45th) vs. AO.
Xavier has been playing some of its most efficient basketball of the season recently and is presently ranked 14th in positive momentum.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Xavier is typically better vs. teams that are likely to allow more second chances off of offensive rebounds. Against foes that have a defensive second-chance potential point rate vs. AO greater than 13.71, Xavier performs above their norm 83% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 30% of the time.
When facing teams that are more proficient at draining the mid-range shot, Xavier often performs worse than normal. Xavier is more efficient than usual 33% of the time when facing teams that have an offensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 35.79%. In their other contests, Xavier performs better than the norm 82% of the time.
Xavier does worse vs. clubs that convert well from outside the arc. When playing squads that have an offensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 34.56%, Xavier performs above average 36% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 80% of the time.
