ANALYSIS: William & Mary presently has one of the below-average teams in college basketball. They have a record of 5-27 and are ranked 326th overall (out of 358) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. Of the 10 schools in the Colonial (average ranking 176.9), they're currently ranked as the worst team in the conference.
William & Mary has one of the most anemic offenses around. They rank 344th in efficiency on that end of the court and score fewer than 90 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. William & Mary tends to be very careless with the ball and allows far too many breakaway opportunities off of their own turnovers. The team's rating for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals vs. AO is 14.42, which ranks eighth from the bottom in D1. William & Mary also struggles to drain shots consistently from most spots on the floor, ranking in the bottom-50 in three of the four primary field goal shooting categories. They are worse off shooting inside the three-point stripe, making good on just 32.3% of their mid-range jumpers (346th in the nation), 52.6% of their near-proximity chances (333rd), and 39.4% of their total shots from the field (334th) vs. AO.
Though they rate better on defense than they do on offense, William & Mary still isn't one of the more capable defensive teams in college hoops. Allowing roughly 106 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #270 in the nation in defensive efficiency. William & Mary has done a pretty poor job this season to prevent opponents from making shots from the inside. The team is ranked 329th in the country in defensive near-proximity percentage, allowing AO to make good on 63.7% of their attempts from close-up. William & Mary has also done a lackluster job this year when defending the mid-range shot. The squad is ranked 322nd nationally in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on 41.7% of their attempts from those in-between spots on the floor. Thankfully, AO will take nowhere near as many mid-range shots vs. William & Mary as they typically would, as only 24.5% of their field goal attempts will come from in-between locations. If William & Mary does have a bright spot on defense, it would have to be their success stopping opponents from earning second-chance opportunities via offensive boards. The team has a rating of 10.17 in potential points allowed off of second chances vs. AO, which ranks 24th-best in college hoops.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
William & Mary does better vs. clubs that convert well from the charity stripe. When playing squads that have an adjusted free throw percentage vs. AO greater than 0.74%, William & Mary performs above average 82% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 30% of the time.
William & Mary performs better against squads that are more proficient at draining the mid-range shot. When facing teams that have an offensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 37.53%, William & Mary is more efficient than normal 69% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 27% of the time.
When playing teams that convert well from outside the arc, William & Mary usually performs better than average. William & Mary is more efficient than normal 62% of the time when facing clubs that have an offensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 31.91%. In all other contests, William & Mary performs better than average 20% of the time.
