ANALYSIS: Not one of the better ball-clubs in college basketball, W. Carolina should be a fairly easy win for most capable opponents. Ranked 305th overall (out of 353) in our most recent ratings, they presently have a record of 7-25. They are also ranked by this site as the worst team (out of 10) in the Southern (average ranking 190.4).
W. Carolina does not provide much of a challenge on defense. They are ranked at #289 in efficiency on that end of the court and give up about 110 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. W. Carolina fares terribly when attempting to stop opponents from converting from the inside. The team is ranked seventh from the bottom in the country in defensive near-proximity percentage, allowing AO to make good on 67.9% of their attempts from close-up. And with such little resistance, AO will merrily cut, slash, and drive right to the hoop as often as possible. Of AO's total field goals, a big portion of them (40.4%) will be from short-distance. W. Carolina also fouls far too much and sends the opposition to the line way too often. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 32.53 vs. AO, the squad is ranked #346 in the country in that category. W. Carolina is lastly extremely underskilled to force steals that turn into quick and easy points. They're ranked #343 in potential points off of breakaway steals with a rating of only 7.78 vs. AO. If W. Carolina does have a bright spot on defense, it would have to be their success stopping opponents from earning second-chance opportunities via offensive boards. The team has a rating of 9.42 in potential points allowed off of second chances vs. AO, which ranks first in college hoops.
W. Carolina doesn't rate much better on offense than they do on defense. Scoring roughly 98 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #264 in the nation in offensive efficiency. W. Carolina tends to be very careless with the ball and allows far too many breakaway opportunities off of their own turnovers. The team's rating for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals vs. AO is 16.99, which ranks second from the bottom in D1. W. Carolina also happens to be one of the very worst in the game when it comes to maximizing the number of shot attempts they get off from the floor. The team is nationally ranked 343rd in offensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of only 77.78 vs. AO. W. Carolina lastly has had serious struggles making their free throws this year. Converting just 65.5% of their attempts, the squad is ranked #331 overall in free throw percentage.
W. Carolina has been one of the more erratic teams in NCAA basketball this year (presently ranked 324th in the country in consistency), which makes forecasting the outcomes of their upcoming games tougher than most.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
W. Carolina is typically worse vs. teams that are more proficient at draining the mid-range shot. Against foes that have an offensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 35.22%, W. Carolina performs above their norm 41% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 89% of the time.
When facing teams that typically allow more than a fair share of breakaway opportunities, W. Carolina often performs better than normal. W. Carolina is more efficient than usual 77% of the time when facing teams that have a potential point rate allowed off steals vs. AO greater than 11.64. In their other contests, W. Carolina performs better than the norm 39% of the time.
W. Carolina does worse vs. clubs that convert well from outside the arc. When playing squads that have an offensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 33.59%, W. Carolina performs above average 43% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 80% of the time.
