ANALYSIS: As an average to slightly above-average foe, Vermont should probably not be discounted by opponents this year. Their record this season is 28-7, and the club is ranked 114th overall (out of 362) in Haslametrics' most recent ratings. They are also ranked by this site as the best team (out of nine) in the America East (average ranking 234.8).
Vermont has a fairly effective defensive attack. Occupying the #56 slot in our defensive efficiency ratings and preferring a more deliberate, half-court style of play (the 15th-slowest pace in D1), they will allow about 99 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. Vermont will take a bite out of many opponents' shooting percentages, based on the fact that the team ranks in the top-50 in three of our four primary defensive field goal categories. They'll inflict the most harm on the outside, allowing AO to convert just 31.8% of their three-pointers (46th in the nation), 34.9% of their mid-range chances (25th), and 40.8% of their total shots from the field (37th). Vermont is also one of the better teams when it comes to not allowing opponents to convert scoring chances off of offensive rebounds. The squad allows AO to convert only 4.2% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 34th in the NCAA).
The offense for Vermont, on the other hand, isn't nearly as efficient as the defense is. The team is ranked 204th in offensive efficiency, scoring about 104 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Vermont is one of the more deficient teams in the nation as it pertains to scoring off of offensive rebounds. Against AO, the team converts only 3.7% of all second-chance opportunities (332nd nationally).
Vermont is one of the more consistent teams in Division I (presently ranked 50th in consistency), so forecasting the outcomes of their future contests tends to be easier than the norm.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When facing teams that allow more chances at the line, Vermont often performs better than normal. Vermont is more efficient than usual 80% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 27.25. In their other contests, Vermont performs better than the norm 26% of the time.
Vermont does worse vs. clubs that tend to get off more shots. When playing squads that have an offensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO greater than 84.37, Vermont performs above average 25% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 59% of the time.
Vermont performs better against squads that do not defend well on the perimeter. When facing teams that have a defensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 33.09%, Vermont is more efficient than normal 59% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 25% of the time.
