ANALYSIS: W. Michigan is a fairly decent basketball team that, while likely better than average, isn't quite good enough to crack any top-25 rankings this year. They are ranked #171 (out of 351) in the most recent Haslametrics ratings and have a record of 20-13. They are also ranked by this site as the #8 team (out of 12) in the MAC (average ranking 152.9).
Based on the data, W. Michigan will likely find more success on offense than on defense. Scoring about 103 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO, they currently occupy the #123 slot in the rankings for offensive efficiency. W. Michigan does a really good job to acquire opportunities from the free throw line. With a free throw attempt rate of 32.78 vs. AO, they are ranked 42nd in the nation at getting to the charity stripe. In addition, the team is in the top-100 in free throw shooting, converting a solid 72.0% of their attempts. If W. Michigan does have a glaring weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's inability to drain mid-range jumpers. The squad makes just 30.9% of their mid-range field goal attempts vs. AO, which ranks 25th-worst in the nation.
The defense for W. Michigan, on the other hand, isn't nearly as efficient as the offense is. The team is ranked 258th in defensive efficiency, allowing about 105 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. W. Michigan fares terribly when attempting to stop opponents from converting from the inside. The team is ranked fourth from the bottom in the country in defensive near-proximity percentage, allowing AO to make good on 68.0% of their attempts from close-up. If W. Michigan does have a bright spot on defense, it would have to be their ability to prevent opponents from draining shot attempts in between the three-point line and the low post. AO will convert just 31.8% of their mid-range field goal attempts, and the team is nationally ranked 42nd-best in that category as a result.
W. Michigan has definitely not been as efficient as of late compared to earlier in the season and, consequently, the team is nationally ranked 338th in positive momentum.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When playing teams that fail to defend efficiently inside the paint, W. Michigan usually performs better than average. W. Michigan is more efficient than normal 71% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive near-proximity field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 59.33%. In all other contests, W. Michigan performs better than average 29% of the time.
W. Michigan is typically better vs. teams that allow a higher number of conversions off of the offensive glass. Against foes that have a defensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 5.71%, W. Michigan performs above their norm 64% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 22% of the time.
