ANALYSIS: W. Illinois is not one of the better teams in Division I this year. Haslametrics has them ranked 301st overall (out of 357) in All-Play Percentage, and the team holds a record of 7-15. Of the nine schools in the Summit League (average ranking 204.1), they're currently ranked as our #8 team in the conference.
Defense is not exactly a strength for W. Illinois this year. The team is ranked 311th in defensive efficiency and allows more than 107 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. W. Illinois allows opposing teams far too many easy chances from the floor, ranking in the bottom-50 in three of the four main defensive field goal shooting categories. They are at their worst when defending outside the paint, allowing AO to convert 37.4% of their three-pointers (332nd in the nation), 45.5% of their mid-range chances (347th), and 47.4% of their total shots from the field (323rd). W. Illinois is also extremely underskilled to force steals that turn into quick and easy points. They're ranked #346 in potential points off of breakaway steals with a rating of only 7.17 vs. AO. W. Illinois lastly fouls far too much and sends the opposition to the line way too often. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 30.18 vs. AO, the squad is ranked #337 in the country in that category.
W. Illinois doesn't rate much better on offense than they do on defense. Scoring roughly 93 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #279 in the nation in offensive efficiency. W. Illinois struggles to drain shots consistently from most spots on the floor, ranking in the bottom-50 in three of the four primary field goal shooting categories. They only convert 30.5% of their three-pointers (313th in the nation), 50.5% of their near-proximity attempts (eighth from the bottom), and 39.2% of their total shots from the field (339th) vs. AO. W. Illinois is also one of the more deficient teams in the nation as it pertains to scoring off of offensive rebounds. Against AO, the team converts only 3.3% of all second-chance opportunities (325th nationally).
W. Illinois has been one of the more erratic teams in NCAA basketball this year (presently ranked 325th in the country in consistency), which makes forecasting the outcomes of their upcoming games tougher than most. On the road, W. Illinois performs somewhat better than their norm, as the squad is nationally ranked 35th in our away-from-home metric.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
W. Illinois is typically better vs. teams that typically allow more than a fair share of breakaway opportunities. Against foes that have a potential point rate allowed off steals vs. AO greater than 10.86, W. Illinois performs above their norm 82% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 40% of the time.

Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 38% of the time.
