ANALYSIS: W. Illinois is not one of the better teams in Division I this year. Haslametrics has them ranked 324th overall (out of 353) in All-Play Percentage, and the team holds a record of 5-21. Of the nine schools in the Summit League (average ranking 203.3), they're currently ranked as the worst team in the conference.
Defense is the farthest thing from a strength for W. Illinois this year. The team ranks 343rd in defensive efficiency, allowing more than 112 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. W. Illinois allows the opposition far too many easy shots from the floor and ranks in the bottom-25 in three of our four major defensive field goal shooting categories. They are at their worst when defending outside the paint, allowing AO to convert 37.5% of their three-pointers (340th in the nation), 45.7% of their mid-range chances (fifth from the bottom), and 48.0% of their total shots from the field (337th). W. Illinois also does a pretty inadequate job to provide chances for themselves to score quickly off of steals. They're ranked #315 in potential points off of breakaway steals with a rating of only 8.27 vs. AO.
Even though the team ranks considerably higher in offensive efficiency, W. Illinois isn't a powerhouse on that end of the floor either. Scoring roughly 95 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #238 in the nation in offensive efficiency. W. Illinois does an extremely poor job drawing fouls and getting to the free throw line. With a free throw attempt rate of just 19.38 vs. AO, they are eighth from the bottom in the overall rankings for that category. W. Illinois will also have a really tough time winning games when taking into consideration their shooting percentage near the basket. The team is ranked ninth from the bottom in near-proximity field goal percentage, making only 49.7% of their attempts from up-close vs. AO. W. Illinois lastly does a terrible job to take advantage of scoring chances off of offensive rebounds. Against AO, the team converts only 3.0% of all second-chance opportunities (343rd nationally), and with a rating of 9.65, they're 325th in potential points scored off of the offensive boards as well. If W. Illinois does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's outstanding shooting at the charity stripe. The squad makes 79.9% of their free throw attempts, which ranks #3 in Division I.
On the road, W. Illinois performs somewhat better than their norm, as the squad is nationally ranked 35th in our away-from-home metric.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
W. Illinois is typically worse vs. teams that tend to get off more shots. Against foes that have an offensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO greater than 80.37, W. Illinois performs above their norm 33% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 92% of the time.
When facing teams that allow more chances at the line, W. Illinois often performs better than normal. W. Illinois is more efficient than usual 100% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 25.73. In their other contests, W. Illinois performs better than the norm 44% of the time.
W. Illinois does worse vs. clubs that allow a higher number of conversions off of the offensive glass. When playing squads that have a defensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 5.48%, W. Illinois performs above average 33% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 80% of the time.
