ANALYSIS: Virginia is a moderately good team, capable of testing many an opponent that they'll encounter. They have a record of 21-14 and are ranked 71st overall (out of 358) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. They are also ranked by this site as the #9 team (out of 15) in the ACC (average ranking 80.9).
Demonstrating a preference for an extremely deliberate pace (the second-slowest in D1), Virginia will mainly try to find success through their defense. They are ranked 45th in defensive efficiency and allow fewer than 94 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Virginia is a superior unit when it comes to preventing opponents from getting to the foul line. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 19.53 vs. AO, they are currently rated 21st in the country in that category. Virginia also does a bang-up job preventing the opposition from draining jumpers in between the three-point line and the low post. They're ranked 23rd in Division I in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 33.3% of their attempts from that distance.
Virginia plays at about the same level on offense as they do on defense. The team ranks 92nd nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 105 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Virginia loves taking the mid-range two, far more so than most other teams. The club is ranked 21st in ratio of mid-range attempts to total field goal attempts. If you do allow them to take that in-between shot, they can certainly make it, too. Currently rated in the top-75 in mid-range shooting percentage, they make roughly 40.7% of their attempts from that distance vs. AO. Virginia is also one of the better teams in the country when it comes to converting scoring chances off of offensive rebounds. Against AO, the team successfully converts 6.3% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 49th nationally).
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Virginia is typically worse vs. teams that tend to allow more shots on the perimeter. Against foes that have a defensive shooting proximity score vs. AO greater than 2.02, Virginia performs above their norm 40% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 90% of the time.
When facing teams that prefer the outside shot, Virginia often performs better than normal. Virginia is more efficient than usual 82% of the time when facing teams that have an offensive shooting proximity score vs. AO greater than 2.02. In their other contests, Virginia performs better than the norm 42% of the time.
Virginia does better vs. clubs that are likely to allow more second chances off of offensive rebounds. When playing squads that have a defensive second-chance potential point rate vs. AO greater than 13.12, Virginia performs above average 80% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 44% of the time.
