ANALYSIS: When you talk about the elite teams in college basketball this year, Virginia most definitely is in the conversation. They have a record of 35-3 and are ranked third overall (out of 353) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. They are also ranked by this site as the best team (out of 15) in the ACC (average ranking 60.1).
Utilizing an extremely deliberate pace (the slowest in D1), Virginia is one of the very most competent offensive teams in the country. Ranked second in offensive efficiency, they'll rack up more than 123 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Virginia is an outstanding shooting team, capable of converting from a variety of locations on the floor and ranking in the top-50 in each of our four most noteworthy field goal categories. The long-ball may be their strength (40.5% from three vs. AO, first in the nation), but the team also makes 65.1% of their near-proximity shots (30th), 42.9% of their mid-range chances (seventh), and 49.6% of their total shots from the field (seventh) vs. AO. Virginia is also one of the very best when it comes to maximizing field goal opportunities. The team is ranked second in the NCAA in offensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 90.93 vs. AO. Virginia lastly allows very few breakaway opportunities for the opposition, which typically translates to fewer turnovers. The team's rating vs. AO for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals is 8.08, which ranks #4 in the country.
The frightening part is that Virginia is nearly as dominant on the defensive end of the floor as they are on the offensive side of things. The team ranks ninth nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 90 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Virginia will put a good dent in the shooting percentages of several opponents, considering the team ranks in the top-50 in each of the four major defensive shooting categories. They allow AO to make just 30.3% of their three-pointers (13th in the nation), 31.6% of their mid-range shots (21st), 55.0% of their near-proximity attempts (48th), and 38.0% of their total shots from the field (eighth). Virginia is also a superior unit when it comes to preventing opponents from getting to the foul line. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 20.00 vs. AO, they are currently rated ninth in the country in that category. Virginia lastly does a fantastic job to prevent opposing teams from capitalizing on chances from offensive rebounds. The squad allows AO to convert only 4.2% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 14th in the NCAA).
Virginia has definitely not been as efficient as of late compared to earlier in the season and, consequently, the team is nationally ranked 340th in positive momentum.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Virginia is typically better vs. teams that allow opponents to shoot well from the field. Against foes that have a defensive field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 39.29%, Virginia performs above their norm 60% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 15% of the time.
When facing teams that tend to get off more shots, Virginia often performs worse than normal. Virginia is more efficient than usual 33% of the time when facing teams that have an offensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO greater than 83.47. In their other contests, Virginia performs better than the norm 73% of the time.
Virginia does worse vs. clubs that convert more frequently off of offensive rebounds.
