ANALYSIS: When you talk about the elite teams in college basketball this year, Virginia most definitely is in the conversation. They have a record of 30-4 and are ranked sixth overall (out of 351) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. They are also ranked by this site as the #2 team (out of 15) in the ACC (average ranking 57.1).
Preferring an extremely deliberate pace (the third-slowest in D1), Virginia is one of the most menacing defensive teams in the country. Ranked second in defensive efficiency, they will allow fewer than 83 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Virginia will wreak havoc with many opponents' shooting percentages this year. And it doesn't really matter where the shots originate; the team ranks in the top-25 in each of the four major defensive shooting categories. They allow AO to make just 30.1% of their three-pointers (11th in the nation), 27.6% of their mid-range shots (second), 50.5% of their near-proximity attempts (sixth), and 36.0% of their total shots from the field (second). Virginia also does a super job to deny opponents offensive rebounds and second chances. They have a rating of 11.64 vs. AO in potential points allowed off of second chances (ranked seventh in the country), and they allow AO to convert just 4.4% of their second-chance opportunities (ranked seventh) as well. Virginia is lastly a superior unit when it comes to preventing opponents from getting to the foul line. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 23.14 vs. AO, they are currently rated 15th in the country in that category. If Virginia does exhibit a weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's unwillingness to take risks in order to score fast points off of the opposition's turnovers. The squad only has a rating of 8.55 in potential points scored off of steals vs. AO, which ranks 32nd-worst in the college game.
Virginia plays at about the same level on offense as they do on defense. The team ranks 19th nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 112 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Virginia is one of the nation's most effective teams finishing close to the iron. The team is ranked tenth in the country in near-proximity field goal percentage, making approximately 67.5% of their attempts from up-close vs. AO. The squad likewise lands in the top-25 in overall offensive field goal percentage and makes good on about 47.0% of their total attempts vs. AO. Virginia also does an outstanding job finishing any scoring chances they obtain from offensive rebounds. Against AO, the team successfully converts 9.2% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 12th nationally). Virginia lastly allows very few breakaway opportunities for the opposition, which typically translates to fewer turnovers. The team's rating vs. AO for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals is 8.76, which ranks #22 in the country.
Virginia has definitely not been as efficient as of late compared to earlier in the season and, consequently, the team is nationally ranked ninth from the bottom in positive momentum. Virginia has also been one of the most erratic teams in college basketball this year (currently ranked 341st overall in consistency), which makes the outcomes of their future games far more difficult to predict.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:

When facing teams that do not defend well on the perimeter, Virginia often performs better than normal. Virginia is more efficient than usual 60% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 32.81%. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 55% of the time.
