ANALYSIS: If you're looking for a squad in the bottom quartile of all Division I basketball teams this year, VMI likely fits the bill. They are ranked #331 (out of 351) in the most recent Haslametrics ratings and have a record of 9-21. They are also ranked by this site as the worst team (out of 10) in the Southern (average ranking 208.3).
VMI has one of the most anemic offenses around. They rank ninth from the bottom in efficiency on that end of the court and score fewer than 87 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. VMI struggles to drain shots consistently from most spots on the floor, ranking in the bottom-50 in three of the four primary field goal shooting categories. They only convert 32.2% of their three-pointers (307th in the nation), 47.9% of their near-proximity attempts (second from the bottom), and 37.4% of their total shots from the field (third from the bottom) vs. AO. VMI also does a terrible job to take advantage of scoring chances off of offensive rebounds. Against AO, the team converts only 3.8% of all second-chance opportunities (sixth from the bottom nationally). VMI lastly does an extremely poor job drawing fouls and getting to the free throw line. With a free throw attempt rate of just 20.87 vs. AO, they are 331st in the overall rankings for that category.
Though they rate better on defense than they do on offense, VMI still isn't one of the more capable defensive teams in college hoops. Allowing roughly 106 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #244 in the nation in defensive efficiency. VMI can be weak on rebounding, giving the opposition too many chances to score off of the offensive glass. The club has a rating of 17.06 vs. AO in potential points allowed off of second chances (315th nationally).
VMI is one of the most consistent teams in NCAA basketball (currently ranked fifth in consistency), which makes the outcomes of their upcoming games far easier to predict.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
VMI performs worse against squads that are typically efficient on offense. When facing teams that have an offensive efficiency rating vs. AO greater than 102.58, VMI is more efficient than normal 27% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 71% of the time.
When playing teams that shoot the ball well from the field, VMI usually performs worse than average. VMI is more efficient than normal 31% of the time when facing clubs that have an offensive field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 42.71%. In all other contests, VMI performs better than average 73% of the time.
VMI is typically worse vs. teams that favor a faster tempo. Against foes that have a pace vs. AO greater than 68.50, VMI performs above their norm 39% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 80% of the time.
