ANALYSIS: While this site doesn't quite consider them to be in the national title hunt, VCU has the potential to be a formidable opponent for many in Division I. Ranked 49th overall (out of 357) in our most recent ratings, they presently have a record of 19-7. Of the 14 schools in the A-10 (average ranking 131.6), they're currently ranked as our #3 team in the conference.
The VCU defense will be extremely problematic for most opposing offenses. Allowing about 89 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO, the club is ranked 14th overall in defensive efficiency. VCU thrives on scoring fast and easy points off of steals. They're ranked seventh in potential points off of breakaway steals vs. AO with a rating of 16.13. VCU will also wreak havoc with many opponents' shooting percentages this year. And it doesn't really matter where the shots originate; the team ranks in the top-25 in each of the four major defensive shooting categories. They allow AO to make just 30.3% of their three-pointers (20th in the nation), 32.7% of their mid-range shots (17th), 52.9% of their near-proximity attempts (21st), and 39.3% of their total shots from the field (17th). If VCU does exhibit a noticeable weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's difficulties stopping opponents from obtaining second-chance opportunities via offensive rebounds. The squad has a rating of 16.43 in potential points allowed off of second chances vs. AO, which ranks 13th-worst in college hoops.
VCU is also a fairly decent team on the offensive end of the court. The team ranks 113th nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 103 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. VCU will routinely look to penetrate, pound the ball inside, and score from as short a distance as possible. The ball-club is fifth in the NCAA in ratio of near-proximity attempts to total field goal attempts. As far as converting those near-proximity shots goes, the team shoots 60.8% vs. AO, which falls somewhere in the middle of the pack of the rankings in that category. VCU is also one of the better teams in the country when it comes to converting scoring chances off of offensive rebounds. Against AO, the team successfully converts 6.7% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 40th nationally).
VCU is one of the most consistent teams in NCAA basketball (currently ranked eighth in consistency), which makes the outcomes of their upcoming games far easier to predict.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
VCU performs worse against squads that effectively clean the offensive glass. When facing teams that have an offensive second-chance potential point rate vs. AO greater than 16.11, VCU is more efficient than normal 13% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 61% of the time.
When playing teams that convert more frequently off of offensive rebounds, VCU usually performs worse than average. VCU is more efficient than normal 27% of the time when facing clubs that have an offensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 4.95%. In all other contests, VCU performs better than average 73% of the time.
VCU is typically better vs. teams that allow a higher number of conversions off of the offensive glass. Against foes that have a defensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 4.79%, VCU performs above their norm 75% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 33% of the time.
