ANALYSIS: Despite their unexceptional win percentage, Texas Tech should be regarded as one of the better teams in college hoops. Their record this season is 18-11, and the club is ranked 13th overall (out of 357) in Haslametrics' most recent ratings. Of the 10 schools in the Big 12 (average ranking 59.9), they're currently ranked as our #2 team in the conference.
Texas Tech has been a force on the defensive end of the court. The team is rated 13th in defensive efficiency and allows fewer than 89 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Texas Tech has extremely pesky defenders that ceaselessly attempt to deny opponents ample opportunity to shoot. The club is ranked 11th in Division I in defensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 76.21 vs. AO. Texas Tech also does a bang-up job preventing the opposition from draining jumpers in between the three-point line and the low post. They're ranked 23rd in Division I in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 33.0% of their attempts from that distance. To capitalize on that weakness, this team will make AO shoot from mid-range locations more than they usually would. Of AO's total field goals, a large portion of them (33.9%) will be from mid-range.
Texas Tech plays at about the same level on offense as they do on defense. The team ranks 19th nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 112 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Texas Tech allows very few breakaway opportunities for the opposition, which typically translates to fewer turnovers. The team's rating vs. AO for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals is 5.15, which ranks #1 in the country. Texas Tech is also one of the very best when it comes to maximizing field goal opportunities. The team is ranked 13th in the NCAA in offensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 87.78 vs. AO. And when they do shoot, they make a fair portion of their shots. Ranked in the top-100 in field goal shooting percentage, the squad converts about 45.5% of their total attempts vs. AO. Texas Tech lastly does a super job in their efforts to get to the free throw line. With a free throw attempt rate of 30.05 vs. AO, they are ranked 14th in the nation at getting to the charity stripe, where the team shoots a rather mediocre 73.1%.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Texas Tech is typically worse vs. teams that tend to capitalize off breakaway opportunities. Against foes that have a potential point rate off steals vs. AO greater than 13.68, Texas Tech never performs above average. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 63% of the time.
When facing teams that allow a greater number of field goal opportunities, Texas Tech often performs better than normal. Texas Tech is more efficient than usual 60% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO greater than 79.50. In their other contests, Texas Tech never performs above average.
Texas Tech does better vs. clubs that aren't terribly skilled defensively. When playing squads that have a defensive efficiency rating vs. AO greater than 94.37, Texas Tech performs above average 80% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 21% of the time.
