ANALYSIS: Despite their unexceptional win percentage, Texas Tech should be regarded as one of the better teams in college hoops. Their record this season is 18-13, and the club is ranked 19th overall (out of 353) in Haslametrics' most recent ratings. Of the 10 schools in the Big 12 (average ranking 45.9), they're currently ranked as our #4 team in the conference.
Texas Tech has been a force on the defensive end of the court. The team is rated 13th in defensive efficiency and allows fewer than 89 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Texas Tech does a really good job to prevent opponents from getting off shots from the field. The club is ranked 27th in Division I in defensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 77.22 vs. AO. Texas Tech also boasts one of the better overall defensive field goal percentages in the country. The team ranks #33 nationally in field goal percentage allowed, as AO only makes good on about 39.9% of their total attempts from the floor.
Texas Tech plays at about the same level on offense as they do on defense. The team ranks 26th nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 109 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Texas Tech allows very few breakaway opportunities for the opposition, which typically translates to fewer turnovers. The team's rating vs. AO for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals is 7.41, which ranks #6 in the country. Texas Tech is also a very dangerous team when it comes to shooting the rock, ranking in the top-25 in three of our four major field goal categories. They convert 37.9% of their three-pointers (13th in the nation), 65.5% of their near-proximity attempts (21st), and 47.4% of their total shots from the field (19th) vs. AO.
Texas Tech has been one of the more erratic teams in NCAA basketball this year (presently ranked 322nd in the country in consistency), which makes forecasting the outcomes of their upcoming games tougher than most.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Texas Tech is typically better vs. teams that are likely to allow more second chances off of offensive rebounds. Against foes that have a defensive second-chance potential point rate vs. AO greater than 13.15, Texas Tech performs above their norm 67% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 27% of the time.
