ANALYSIS: Per this website's calculations, UTEP is somewhere between an average to slightly above-average D1 ball-club. They have a record of 18-16 and are ranked 180th overall (out of 362) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. They are also ranked by this site as the #5 team (out of nine) in Conference USA (average ranking 194.1).
The primary strength for UTEP is defense. The team is ranked 68th in efficiency, allowing fewer than 100 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. UTEP has extremely pesky defenders that ceaselessly attempt to deny opponents ample opportunity to shoot. The club is ranked first in Division I in defensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 74.52 vs. AO. UTEP also thrives on scoring fast and easy points off of steals. They're ranked second in potential points off of breakaway steals vs. AO with a rating of 18.52. (Predictably, this aggressive style of play tends to result in too many fouls -- the team has a defensive free throw attempt rate of 31.48, ranked #334 in the country -- so they need to be wary of opponents that can convert from the foul line.) UTEP lastly does a super job to deny opponents offensive rebounds and second chances. They have a rating of 10.82 vs. AO in potential points allowed off of second chances (ranked 19th in the country). If UTEP does exhibit a weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's difficulties stopping opponents from converting from the inside. AO will convert 63.0% of their near-proximity field goal attempts, and the team ranks 29th-worst in that category as a result.
Unfortunately, UTEP is not even remotely close to being as good on offense as they are on defense. The team is ranked 302nd in offensive efficiency, scoring about 98 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. UTEP happens to be one of the very worst in the game when it comes to maximizing the number of shot attempts they get off from the floor. The team is nationally ranked 346th in offensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of only 81.02 vs. AO. UTEP also won't enter the conversation if you're looking to list the best three-point shooting teams in the country. They are ranked 316th in three-point field goal percentage nationally and make just 31.3% of their attempts from long vs. AO.
UTEP has been playing better basketball in their most recent outings, as evidenced by the team's #41 ranking in positive momentum. UTEP is also one of the more consistent teams in Division I (presently ranked 26th in consistency), so forecasting the outcomes of their future contests tends to be easier than the norm.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
UTEP is typically worse vs. teams that tend to capitalize off breakaway opportunities. Against foes that have a potential point rate off steals vs. AO greater than 10.11, UTEP performs above their norm 32% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 75% of the time.
When facing teams that allow a greater number of field goal opportunities, UTEP often performs better than normal. UTEP is more efficient than usual 78% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO greater than 85.03. In their other contests, UTEP performs better than the norm 36% of the time.
