ANALYSIS: While not an atrocious team by any means, UTEP is not exactly one that should appear in many top-100 rankings either. Ranked 187th overall (out of 353) in our most recent ratings, they presently have a record of 17-15. They are also ranked by this site as the #8 team (out of 14) in Conference USA (average ranking 174.7).
Based on their performances this year, UTEP will likely find more success on defense than they will on offense. Allowing about 96 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO, they currently occupy the #108 slot in the ratings for defensive efficiency. UTEP owns a pretty good track record against teams that shoot the three. They rank 52nd in the NCAA in defensive three-point percentage, allowing AO to make just 30.9% of their attempts from afar.
The offense for UTEP, on the other hand, isn't nearly as efficient as the defense is. The team is ranked 254th in offensive efficiency, scoring about 94 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. UTEP needs improvement when it comes to draining the mid-range shot. The team is ranked 307th in field goal percentage from that distance, making only 33.7% of their mid-range attempts vs. AO. If UTEP does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's outstanding shooting at the charity stripe. The squad makes 76.2% of their free throw attempts, which ranks #31 in Division I.
UTEP is one of the most consistent teams in NCAA basketball (currently ranked second in consistency), which makes the outcomes of their upcoming games far easier to predict.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
UTEP does worse vs. clubs that do not defend well on the perimeter. When playing squads that have a defensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 33.82%, UTEP performs above average 18% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 78% of the time.
UTEP performs worse against squads that allow more chances at the line. When facing teams that have a defensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 27.78, UTEP is more efficient than normal 20% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 74% of the time.
When playing teams that allow a greater number of field goal opportunities, UTEP usually performs better than average. UTEP is more efficient than normal 90% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO greater than 81.52. In all other contests, UTEP performs better than average 37% of the time.
