ANALYSIS: Tenn. Tech is not one of the better teams in Division I this year. Their record this season is 8-23, and the club is ranked 326th overall (out of 353) in Haslametrics' most recent ratings. Of the 12 schools in the OVC (average ranking 221.4), they're currently ranked as our #11 team in the conference.
Offense comes as a real struggle to Tenn. Tech this year. The team is rated tenth from the bottom in offensive efficiency and scores fewer than 88 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Tenn. Tech tends to be very careless with the ball and allows far too many breakaway opportunities off of their own turnovers. The team's rating for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals vs. AO is 16.65, which ranks third from the bottom in D1. Tenn. Tech also has had serious struggles making their free throws this year. Converting just 64.0% of their attempts, the squad is ranked #343 overall in free throw percentage. Tenn. Tech lastly shoots dreadfully from the floor and ranks in the bottom-25 in three of our four major field goal shooting categories. They are worse off shooting inside the three-point stripe, making good on just 31.0% of their mid-range jumpers (332nd in the nation), 52.8% of their near-proximity chances (334th), and 39.1% of their total shots from the field (338th) vs. AO.
Even though the team ranks considerably higher in defensive efficiency, Tenn. Tech isn't a powerhouse on that end of the floor either. Allowing roughly 106 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #212 in the nation in defensive efficiency. Tenn. Tech gives up far too many offensive rebounds and second chances to their opponents. The club has a rating of 18.32 vs. AO in potential points allowed off of second chances (sixth from the bottom nationally), and they let AO convert a healthy 8.7% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked tenth from the bottom) as well.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Tenn. Tech is typically worse vs. teams that convert well from outside the arc. Against foes that have an offensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 35.08%, Tenn. Tech performs above their norm 22% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 65% of the time.
When facing teams that effectively clean the offensive glass, Tenn. Tech often performs better than normal. Tenn. Tech is more efficient than usual 69% of the time when facing teams that have an offensive second-chance potential point rate vs. AO greater than 13.36. In their other contests, Tenn. Tech performs better than the norm 31% of the time.
Tenn. Tech does worse vs. clubs that allow more chances at the line. When playing squads that have a defensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 24.49, Tenn. Tech performs above average 39% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 73% of the time.
