ANALYSIS: UT Martin presently has one of the below-average teams in college basketball. Carrying a record of 12-19, they are currently rated #303 overall (out of 353) in All-Play Percentage this season. Of the 12 schools in the OVC (average ranking 221.4), they're currently ranked as our #9 team in the conference.
UT Martin has a very sieve-like defense that gives up points way too easily. The team is ranked seventh from the bottom in efficiency on that end of the court and gives up more than 116 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. UT Martin can be counted on to make some of the inferior shooting teams look pretty capable. The team ranks in the bottom-50 in each of the four major defensive field goal shooting categories. They allow AO to make 38.0% of their three-pointers (33rd-worst in the nation), 41.8% of their mid-range jumpers (16th-worst), 67.6% of their near-proximity chances (eighth-worst), and 49.3% of their total shots from the field (seventh-worst). UT Martin is also one of the very worst teams in the game when it comes to preventing opponents from scoring off of offensive rebounds. The team allows AO to convert 8.6% of all second-chance opportunities (343rd nationally), and with a rating of 16.17, they're 319th in potential points surrendered off of the offensive boards as well.
Even though the team ranks considerably higher in offensive efficiency, UT Martin isn't a powerhouse on that end of the floor either. Scoring roughly 101 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #204 in the nation in offensive efficiency. UT Martin struggles to draw fouls and earn opportunities at the free throw line. With a free throw attempt rate of just 21.77 vs. AO, they are 316th in the overall rankings for that category. If UT Martin does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's outstanding shooting at the charity stripe. The squad makes 75.9% of their free throw attempts, which ranks #32 in Division I.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
UT Martin is typically worse vs. teams that favor a faster tempo. Against foes that have a pace vs. AO greater than 69.61, UT Martin performs above their norm 33% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 88% of the time.
When facing teams that are typically efficient on offense, UT Martin often performs worse than normal. UT Martin is more efficient than usual 47% of the time when facing teams that have an offensive efficiency rating vs. AO greater than 97.14. In their other contests, UT Martin performs better than the norm 100% of the time.
UT Martin does better vs. clubs that aren't terribly skilled defensively. When playing squads that have a defensive efficiency rating vs. AO greater than 106.68, UT Martin performs above average 92% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 44% of the time.
