ANALYSIS: BYU has a fairly solid squad that likely falls within the top quartile of all teams in college basketball this year. Carrying a record of 20-7, they are currently rated #42 overall (out of 357) in All-Play Percentage this season. They are also ranked by this site as the #2 team (out of 10) in the WCC (average ranking 125.3).
BYU has a fairly effective defensive attack. Occupying the #35 slot in our defensive efficiency ratings, they will allow about 92 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. BYU does a super job to deny opponents offensive rebounds and second chances. They have a rating of 8.77 vs. AO in potential points allowed off of second chances (ranked third in the country), and they allow AO to convert just 3.2% of their second-chance opportunities (ranked 15th) as well. BYU is also one of the very best in the land in overall defensive field goal percentage. The team ranks #12 nationally in field goal percentage allowed, as AO only makes good on about 38.9% of their total attempts from the floor. BYU lastly does a bang-up job preventing the opposition from draining jumpers in between the three-point line and the low post. They're ranked 15th in Division I in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 32.3% of their attempts from that distance. To capitalize on that weakness, this team will make AO shoot from mid-range locations more than they usually would. Of AO's total field goals, a large portion of them (39.2%) will be from mid-range.
BYU plays at about the same level on offense as they do on defense. The team ranks 53rd nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 108 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. BYU is a very dangerous team when it comes to shooting the rock, ranking in the top-25 in three of our four major field goal categories. They are most proficient from two-point range, making good on 44.9% of their mid-range jumpers (17th in the nation), 68.7% of their near-proximity chances (sixth), and 47.9% of their total shots from the field (25th) vs. AO.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
BYU does worse vs. clubs that favor a faster tempo. When playing squads that have a pace vs. AO greater than 69.39, BYU performs above average 21% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 67% of the time.
BYU performs worse against squads that find ways to get to the free throw line. When facing teams that have an offensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 24.74, BYU is more efficient than normal 27% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 64% of the time.
