ANALYSIS: BYU is one of the teams in the upper echelon of college basketball this year. Carrying a record of 24-8, they are currently rated #22 overall (out of 353) in All-Play Percentage this season. They are also ranked by this site as the #2 team (out of 10) in the WCC (average ranking 125.3).
BYU is undoubtedly one of the best in the business on offense. The team is rated 11th in offensive efficiency, scoring more than 111 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. BYU is one of the most lethal teams in the country when it comes to shooting the basketball, ranking in the top-25 in each of our four major field goal categories. The long-ball may be their strength (41.8% from three vs. AO, first in the nation), but the team also makes 69.3% of their near-proximity shots (third), 41.6% of their mid-range chances (23rd), and 49.5% of their total shots from the field (third) vs. AO. BYU will also likely shoot a fair share of three-pointers each contest. The team ranks 67th in ratio of three-point attempts to total field goal attempts. If BYU does have a glaring weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's difficulties obtaining second-chance opportunities from offensive rebounds. The squad only has a rating of 9.22 vs. AO in potential points off of second chances, which ranks 17th-worst in college hoops.
BYU plays at roughly the same level defensively as they do offensively. The team ranks 37th nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 91 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. BYU does a fantastic job to prevent opposing teams from capitalizing on chances from offensive rebounds. The squad allows AO to convert only 3.4% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 12th in the NCAA), and with a rating of 10.49, they're 30th in potential points allowed off of the offensive glass as well. BYU also does an outstanding job shutting down the opposition from behind the arc. They rank 13th in the NCAA in defensive three-point percentage, allowing AO to make just 29.5% of their attempts from afar. If BYU does exhibit a weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's difficulties stopping opponents from converting from the inside. AO will convert 64.8% of their near-proximity field goal attempts, and the team ranks 33rd-worst in that category as a result.
BYU has been one of the most erratic teams in college basketball this year (currently ranked 341st overall in consistency), which makes the outcomes of their future games far more difficult to predict.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
BYU does better vs. clubs that do not defend well on the perimeter. When playing squads that have a defensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 33.30%, BYU performs above average 75% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 26% of the time.
BYU performs better against squads that prefer the outside shot. When facing teams that have an offensive shooting proximity score vs. AO greater than 2.02, BYU is more efficient than normal 75% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 26% of the time.
When playing teams that shoot the ball well from the field, BYU usually performs worse than average. BYU is more efficient than normal 11% of the time when facing clubs that have an offensive field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 45.45%. In all other contests, BYU performs better than average 59% of the time.
