ANALYSIS: While this site doesn't quite consider them to be in the national title hunt, North Texas has the potential to be a formidable opponent for many in Division I. Their record this season is 19-15, and the club is ranked 76th overall (out of 362) in Haslametrics' most recent ratings. They are also ranked by this site as the #2 team (out of 14) in the AAC (average ranking 134.8).
Demonstrating a preference for an extremely deliberate pace (the fourth-slowest in D1), North Texas will mainly try to find success through their defense. They are ranked 88th in defensive efficiency and allow fewer than 101 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. North Texas does a bang-up job preventing the opposition from draining jumpers in between the three-point line and the low post. They're ranked sixth in Division I in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 32.9% of their attempts from that distance. North Texas has also had some success this season preventing opponents from converting many of their overall field goal attempts. The team ranks #75 nationally in field goal percentage allowed, as AO only makes good on about 41.9% of their total attempts from the floor. If North Texas does exhibit a weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's difficulties stopping opponents from obtaining second-chance opportunities via offensive rebounds. The squad has a rating of 15.72 in potential points allowed off of second chances vs. AO, which ranks 40th-worst in college hoops.
North Texas plays at about the same level on offense as they do on defense. The team ranks 94th nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 110 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. North Texas is one of the most accurate teams when shooting from long-distance. They're ranked 18th nationally in three-point field goal percentage and make about 38.1% of their attempts from there vs. AO. North Texas also has one of the better squads in the college game when it comes to maximizing opportunities to score. The team is ranked 44th in the NCAA in offensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 88.61 vs. AO. As far as making those field goal attempts goes, the team is somewhat middle-of-the-road, converting about 44.3% of them vs. AO. If North Texas does have a weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's inability to drain mid-range jumpers. The squad makes just 35.2% of their mid-range field goal attempts vs. AO, which ranks 49th-worst in the nation.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
North Texas does better vs. clubs that convert well from outside the arc. When playing squads that have an offensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 34.78%, North Texas performs above average 77% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 32% of the time.
North Texas performs better against squads that favor a faster tempo. When facing teams that have a pace vs. AO greater than 68.93, North Texas is more efficient than normal 80% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 36% of the time.
When playing teams that effectively clean the offensive glass, North Texas usually performs worse than average. North Texas is more efficient than normal 20% of the time when facing clubs that have an offensive second-chance potential point rate vs. AO greater than 15.95. In all other contests, North Texas performs better than average 64% of the time.
