ANALYSIS: While this site doesn't quite consider them to be in the national title hunt, North Texas has the potential to be a formidable opponent for many in Division I. Haslametrics has them ranked 74th overall (out of 364) in All-Play Percentage, and the team holds a record of 27-9. Of the 13 schools in the AAC (average ranking 159.4), they're currently ranked as our #2 team in the conference.
While favoring an extremely deliberate pace (the third-slowest in D1), the primary strength for North Texas is defense. The team is ranked 60th in efficiency, allowing fewer than 101 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. North Texas has been able to successfully prevent opponents from making shots between the three-point stripe and the low post. They're ranked 47th in Division I in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 33.5% of their attempts from that distance. North Texas also owns a pretty good track record against teams that shoot the three. They rank 66th in the NCAA in defensive three-point percentage, allowing AO to make just 32.1% of their attempts from afar.
North Texas is also a fairly decent team on the offensive end of the court. The team ranks 111th nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 111 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. North Texas favors the mid-range jumper over any of the others. The club is ranked 33rd in ratio of mid-range attempts to total field goal attempts. If you do allow them to take that in-between shot, they can certainly make it, too. Currently rated in the top-100 in mid-range shooting percentage, they make roughly 39.5% of their attempts from that distance vs. AO. North Texas also does a really good job converting from the free throw line. Making 77.0% of their attempts from the stripe, they are ranked 41st nationally in free throw percentage. Moreover, they get ample opportunity to beat you from the line, as the ball-club falls in the top-100 in free throw attempt rate with a rating of 29.75 vs. AO.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
North Texas does better vs. clubs that typically allow more than a fair share of breakaway opportunities. When playing squads that have a potential point rate allowed off steals vs. AO greater than 12.06, North Texas performs above average 100% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 26% of the time.
North Texas performs worse against squads that convert well from the charity stripe. When facing teams that have an adjusted free throw percentage vs. AO greater than 0.69%, North Texas is more efficient than normal 30% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 91% of the time.
When playing teams that convert more frequently off of offensive rebounds, North Texas usually performs worse than average. North Texas is more efficient than normal 18% of the time when facing clubs that have an offensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 7.04%. In all other contests, North Texas performs better than average 65% of the time.
