ANALYSIS: Despite having a win percentage north of .500, Southern is definitely a below-average ball-club in college hoops this year. They have a record of 17-15 and are ranked 270th overall (out of 353) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. They are also ranked by this site as the #2 team (out of 10) in the SWAC (average ranking 313.5). With a strength-of-schedule rating of 0.305 (which ranks 339th in the nation), Southern has faced some of the easiest opponents in all of college basketball.
Offense is not the strong suit when it comes to Southern. The team is ranked 281st in offensive efficiency and scores fewer than 93 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Southern is not one of the better teams when it comes to sinking foul shots. Converting just 65.1% of their attempts, the squad is ranked #326 overall in free throw percentage.
Though they rate better on defense than they do on offense, Southern still isn't one of the more capable defensive teams in college hoops. Allowing roughly 100 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #188 in the nation in defensive efficiency. Southern fouls far too much and sends the opposition to the line way too often. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 33.86 vs. AO, the squad is ranked #349 in the country in that category. If Southern does have a bright spot on defense, it would have to be their ability to limit the number of shot attempts by the opposition. The team has a defensive field goal attempt rate of 74.66 vs. AO, which ranks ninth-best in college basketball.
Southern has been playing much better basketball as of late and is presently ranked seventh in positive momentum because of it. Southern has also been one of the more erratic teams in NCAA basketball this year (presently ranked 315th in the country in consistency), which makes forecasting the outcomes of their upcoming games tougher than most.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:

Southern is more efficient than normal 32% of the time when facing clubs that have an offensive field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 39.55%.
